MERCER ISLAND, Wash. - The city of Mercer Island plans to sue Sound Transit and the State Department of Transportation over I-90 access, which could freeze the East Light construction project set to begin in June. The City Council unanimously approved the legal action Monday during a packed council meeting. They plan to sue both agencies and seek a moratorium on the construction as they search for short-term solutions to their traffic concerns. In response to the authorized legal action, Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff released a statement calling the decision “highly regrettable.” “While Sound Transit remains ready to reach...

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray wants to know exactly what President Donald Trump has planned for cities like Seattle that vow to resist federal immigration enforcement actions. Murray, in his final State of the City address delivered Tuesday from a mosque, said Seattle was filing public records requests with the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies seeking information about the Trump administration's definition of "sanctuary cities" and what "enforcement actions the federal government may take against us." Seattle has vowed to protect immigrants and refugees and to not help federal authorities. Murray has instructed city departments to rework budgets...

American leftists see huge gains as anger grows against Donald Trump's anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim policies. The election of far-right President Donald Trump has led to a surge in membership of socialist organisations across the United States. During his first few weeks in office, Trump has already issued a flurry of executive orders targeting Muslims and immigrants, while moving to lift regulations on Wall Street. In response, protests have taken place in cities across the country. Last week, demonstrations against Trump's now frozen ban on travellers from seven Muslim-majority countries were held at airports. The day after his inauguration, millions joined...

A plague has beset the Seattle area – an increase in heroin overdose deaths in recent years that has reached “crisis levels,” according to a report by a task force convened by the mayors of Seattle and neighboring cities in King County, Washington state. The best way to address the plague, task force members agreed, is to establish so-called “Community Health Engagement Locations” where “supervised consumption occurs for adults with substance abuse disorders…” Of course, what the task force really is recommending are legalized shooting galleries; supposed “safe” sites where junkies are given clean needles with which they are free...

Customs and Border Protection told major US airlines Friday night that it is reinstating visas following a federal judge’s decision to temporarily halt President Donald Trump’s travel ban. CBP is “back to business as usual” prior to the situation that was in place before last week’s executive order, an airline executive told CNN. Airlines are expected as soon as Friday night to start removing travel alerts from their websites and getting messages out to customers to alert them about the change.

"...Just so you know, I voted for Hillary [Clinton]," Wilson said in the video. "But, when you think about it's only been, what, two weeks ... We've got to attack this issue here. Basically, I think that when you think about all the negativity that's happened within a 10-day period, or however many days it's been, it's already too much. It's already crazy, it's already affecting people's hearts and souls and lives in such a negative way, in my opinion. "Now you kind of recognize that people's feelings are getting hurt, people's lives getting changed, people are getting sent back...

F-bombing anti-Trump Black Lives Matter agitator: A foul-mouthed Black Lives Matter agitator in Seattle told a rally that President Donald Trump and many others should be killed. The Daily Caller identifies the “Black Lives Matter” apparel-wearing megaphone user as female, which may not be accurate. To this writer the person appears to be a male with a high-pitched voice. But there is no way to be sure of the sex of the speaker merely from viewing the video. Moreover, the speaker may identify as something other than male or female, or human, for that matter, so this post will avoid...

An elderly woman demanded a Donald Trump supporter seated next to her be moved, but she quickly found out that’s not how the world works. Scott Kotesky, in a window seat, posted video on Saturday showing a woman in the middle seat complaining about him to airline personnel. According to Kotesky: Just had the craziest experience ever on an airplane: I’m boarding my flight from Baltimore to Seattle and approach my seat. I had an upgraded seat that I paid a little extra for because of the long 6 hour flight. As I approach my row I smile and motion...

Leading MVP candidate Matt Ryan riddled Seattle's secondary for 338 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Atlanta Falcons to a convincing 36-20 victory over the Seahawks in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Here's what we learned in Saturday's game: After both teams traded clinical opening-drive touchdowns that spilled over to the second quarter, a holding penalty on special teamer Kevin Pierre-Louis swung the game in Atlanta's favor. Devin Hester's 80-yard punt return would have set the Seahawks up at the seven-yard line with a chance to take a commanding 17-7 lead. Instead, Seattle lost 84 yards of field position,...

"Mr. President, I wish to share a few other thoughts [...] Earlier, one of our colleagues, Senator Murray, for whom I have great admiration, I understand told NPR: All things considered, I have stood on the line in Everett, Washington, where we have thousands of workers who go to work every day to build these planes. I would challenge anybody to tell me that they stood on a line in Alabama and seen anybody build anything. [...] DOD’s latest acquisition strategy for the KC-X aerial refueling tanker replacement competition is, unfortunately, deeply flawed. Instead of the modern, multirole, game-changing, transformational...

When it comes to mass discrimination, history has not been kind to people of Jewish faith. That’s why the local chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace has taken to solidarity with persecuted refugees and those of Muslim faith, even if it is as simple as a sign that says “Refugees are Welcome Here.” “As Jewish folks in particular, because we are not right now being targeted by the state, we really want to stand in solidarity with those who are being targeted, including Muslims and all people of color,” said Wendy Elisheva Somerson, a founding member of Seattle’s chapter...

Seattle’s only Socialist council member is using government resources to promote an anti-Trump event on Inauguration Day. Kshama Sawant wrote a letter Seattle residents as 2016 came to a close that urged them to resist “right-wing anti-worker bigot” President-elect Donald Trump. A 10-paragraph screed against the billionaire ends with a link to “Resist Trump: Occupy Inauguration — Seattle!” on Facebook. Nearly 9,000 people have seen the event and 3,000 have committed to attend. “Thank you for making 2016 a year to remember. When we fight, we win!” the Dec. 31 letter reads. “We cannot, as Hillary Clinton suggested, ‘give Trump...

A Seattle chef wants people in the city to do something positive on Jan. 20 and ignore the presidential inauguration. “In all honesty, we are trying to take away attention from the inauguration and turn it into something positive,” Renee Erickson told KIRO Radio’s Jason Rantz on Thursday. Erickson will close one of her Capitol Hill restaurant’s, Bar Melusine, to host a party and raise money for the Anti-Defamation League, she says. She is encouraging other restaurateurs to do something similar — close down and host a fundraising event. “On our end, we want to create an environment where we...
