Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson has named his seventh communications director in less than five years after firing Deeda Seed, a longtime friend and his former chief of staff. Deeda Seed Clifford Lyon, a former executive with a gift wholesale company and a member of the Human Rights Center of Utah governing board, replaces Seed, who Anderson fired Friday apparently for complaining about his management style and in part over how the controversy surrounding his involvement in last week's anti-war protest during President Bush's visit was being handled. Like some of her predecessors, Seed complained that Anderson doesn't abide dissent...

Salt Lake City's Mayor Rocky Anderson used e-mail this week to call upon activists, Democrats and some of his top administrative staff for “the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen,” when President Bush appears before a national veterans convention Monday. “There should be a collaboration of health-care-provision advocates, seniors, the (gay, lesbian and bisexual and transsexual) community, anti-Patriot Act advocates and other civil libertarians, anti-war folks, pro-Social Security advocates, environmental advocates, anti-nuclear-testing advocates, and anti-nuclear-waste-shipment-and-storage advocates,” the mayor wrote in the e-mail sent Friday. The mayor, a Democrat who serves in an officially nonpartisan office plans to join the...

The suicide of a promising boxer in West Philadelphia has raised a number of questions with few, if any, definitive answers. The memorial to Najai Turpin continues to grow as well as the list of questions as to how this could have happened. Family and friends are only left to speculate as to why 23-year-old boxer Najai Turpin might have killed himself. His network debut on the reality show "The Contender" was just weeks away: his ticket out of obscurity to realize his dream. According to his girlfriend, he shot himself while the two sat in his car in front...

“Million Dollar Baby’s” Multi-Million Dollar Rip-Off By Debbie Schlussel “Million Dollar Baby” will win the Academy Awards. Not because it’s the Best Picture. But because it’s Hollywood’s best political propaganda of the year. More effective than “Fahrenheit 911.” Think “Baby” is about Rocky in a sports-bra—as it’s being marketed? You’ve fallen for the “Million Dollar” lie. What it’s really about, has nothing to do with Rocky Balboa or boxing. That’s just the cover story to suck movie-goers in for a nefarious message. “Baby”—which has critics gushing all over each other—is a two-hour, twenty-minute exercise in subtle and then not-so-subtle left-wing...

<p>Arnold Schwarzenegger took over California's governorship last week with an aggressive gusto that was -- largely by design -- very reminiscent of his title character in the "Terminator" movies.</p>
<p>"It's true that things may get harder before they get better," Schwarzenegger told Californians during his inaugural address. "But I've never been afraid of the struggle, I've never been afraid of the fight, and I've never been afraid of the hard work."</p>

NEW YORK - The boxer who was the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone (news)'s "Rocky" films plans to file a lawsuit against the actor for illegally using his name to promote the films and other merchandise, attorneys said Friday. Chuck Wepner, 65, is seeking $15 million in damages from the right of publicity claim, said his attorney Anthony Mango. The suit will be filed next week in New Jersey State Court. "Stallone is keenly aware that having a movie based on true story adds an appeal and he capitalizes on that, but has never given Chuck anything back," Mango said. Wepner...

In Utah, Rocky Anderson is seen as a Democrat with a capital D. But outside the state -- in Massachusetts, to be specific -- the Salt Lake City mayor might as well be a Republican, at least according to a prominent Democrat. After all, last year Anderson endorsed Republican Mitt Romney, of 2002 Olympic fame, for governor of the Bay State. For that, Arthur Powell of the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee is practically calling Anderson a turncoat in a series of e-mails sent this week to Utah Democrats who recently endorsed the mayor's re-election bid in the nonpartisan race. "Here...

Terrorism views colored by candidates' backgrounds By DEE-ANN DURBIN The Associated Press 8/18/02 8:52 AM LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Republican U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Raczkowski is a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves who has spent a decade rising through the military ranks. His Democratic opponent, U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, was never in the military but has served in Washington on the Senate Armed Services Committee since 1979, when Raczkowski was 11 years old. With their very different backgrounds, the candidates seldom see eye-to-ey on how to combat terrorism and secure Michigan's safety, or when action should be taken against...
