  • White House takes measured stance on Israeli aid ship attack (But not Hillary)

The White House and lawmakers on Tuesday refrained from condemning a deadly Israeli attack on Gaza-bound ships carrying humanitarian aid. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs would not go much further than a United Nations Security Council resolution that condemned the loss of life without criticizing Israel’s actions. Gibbs echoed the resolution calling for the U.N. investigation of the incident to be “prompt, impartial, credible and transparent.” At least 10 civilians were killed in the attack, and many were wounded. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to visit President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday, but he...

McDonald's Corp said it hired Robert Gibbs, U.S. President Barack Obama's press secretary during his first term, as its chief communications officer. The world's biggest restaurant chain by sales also named Bacardi Ltd's Silvia Lagnado as its chief marketing officer, a position vacant since 2010. Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook laid out plans in May to overhaul the company's businesses and management as part of efforts to make the fast-food chain a "modern, progressive burger company." McDonald's, which on Monday reported its 12th straight decline in monthly same-store sales, is fighting to lure back customers lost to more nimble rivals and...

Things got chippy on Morning Joe today after Amy Holmes of The Blaze pointed out that President Obama has personalized and publicized his conflict with Benjamin Netanyahu in a way he hasn't done even with despots like Kim Jong Un or the Castro brothers. When Holmes added that "only Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be the focal point of this president's ire," former Obama spokesman Gibbs called Holmes' statement "the silliest thing I've probably heard in a long time." - View the video here.

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Monday pushed back at House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa’s (R-Calif.) claims that top officials from the IRS’s Washington, D.C. office directed the targeting of conservative groups, calling the allegations unsubstantiated and “shameful.” “Republicans are on the verge of overplaying their hand publicly and the American people will quickly lose interest on their side in this,” Gibbs said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “They want to see the IRS cleaned up, but they understand that Darrell Issa is doing nothing more than politicizing this event. Democrats fought back Sunday against claims from a former Obama aide that the White House might delay Obamacare’s employer mandate. House Minority Leader Rep. Former Obama White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs appeared on the “Meet the Press” roundtable Sunday and laid bare truths about Washington, and his former boss’s spokesman. As the show’s featured guest, White House adviser Dan Pfeiffer painted a ludicrously optimistic portrait of the 2014 midterm elections for Democrats, stating emphatically, “I believe we will keep the Senate.” Later in the show, Gibbs admitted the Democrats could “absolutely” lose the Senate. If Dems wanted to find someone to attack Chris Christie's credibility for claiming he didn't know what was going on in his administration, couldn't they have found someone better than Robert Gibbs? Has the White House learned a lesson yet from the fallout from ObamaCare? Former press secretary and Barack Obama campaign guru Robert Gibbs certainly hopes so. Gibbs tells Morning Joe today that the use of foggy metrics like “works for a vast majority of users” has left the Obama administration open to scathing criticisms of its honesty and competence while many users see the site fail to process their requests. Potemkin Village, anyone? Joe Scarborough has offered a scathing simile for the new-'n-improved Obamacare website. On today's Morning Joe, he likened the site to the set of a Hollywood Western--pushing back the facade reveals that there's nothing behind it. Even former Obama spox Robert Gibbs—proudly sporting an Auburn jersey—acknowledged that big chunks of the system, including the payment mechanism for subsidies, haven't even been built yet. Now that he's been freed from that role and become a news analyst—albeit at MSNBC—Gibbs has become considerably more candid. Readers will recall, for example, that he described Chuck Hagel as "unimpressive and unprepared" at his Senate confirmation hearing. Today, Gibbs took that frankness a significant step further. The Obama administration on Wednesday voiced its support for the Egyptian people’s rights to freedom of expression and assembly, as a second day of protests in Cairo saw police using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs declined to say whether the U.S. still supports Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, reiterating only that Egypt remains a “strong ally.” “We have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the...

The administration tried to strike a cautious balance Friday between backing a longtime U.S. ally and supporting pro-democracy demonstrators as violent protests against the regime in Egypt spiraled out of control. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs called for restraint in Egypt as protesters there continue to square off with government forces. Gibbs said President Obama still has not spoken with endangered Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who has ruled the country for nearly 30 years, but he said U.S. officials have been communicating to Egyptian officials American displeasure with the situation. "We have throughout the process, our ambassador and others...

The answer seems to be 'no.' "I don't have an up -- an updated list of calls," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told the press when asked if President Obama has spoken to any world leaders about the deteriorating situation in Egypt.

President Obama could tap a new White House press secretary by the end of this week, outgoing spokesman Robert Gibbs said Wednesday. The candidates, according to Democrats familiar with the process, include two veteran party operatives who don't currently work at the White House: former Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney and Doug Hattaway, who served as spokesman for Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign and then for Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2008 quest for the Democratic nomination. Several internal candidates are also being considered, including deputy press secretary Bill Burton, deputy communications director Jennifer Psaki and Jay Carney, the vice president's...

Here’s what you need to know from Monday’s (1/24/2011)White House briefing with press secretary Robert Gibbs: -- Gibbs hinted that President Obama will talk about gun rights in his State of the Union address.... -- Gibbs snuck a jab at the so-called birthers who don’t believe Obama was born in Hawaii. “I think rational people have long ago, many when they first heard and saw the president, come to the conclusion of his citizenship,” he said.

When President Obama thanked Robert Gibbs for his service on Wednesday, he suggested it made sense for his outgoing press secretary to want to go earn big money. "He's had a six-year stretch now where basically he's been going 24/7 with relatively modest pay," Obama told the New York Times. But at a time of persistent unemployment and a sagging economy, Obama's comments begged a question: Is a six-figure government salary really "relatively modest"? Opponents may see his thoughts on pay as red meat for the growing fight regarding public sector compensation. Mayors, governors and lawmakers of both parties are...

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed Wednesday that he is leaving the administration in the coming days, saying he will play an outside advisory role and give speeches before helping President Obama gear up for the 2012 campaign. Gibbs, addressing reports of his departure at his daily briefing for the first time, said the major staffing changes about to hit the White House will benefit Obama. "You have to admit there's a bubble in here to some degree," Gibbs said. The decision to leave the White House for the private sector came as something of a surprise: Gibbs, 39,...

It’s a day of both celebration and mourning for conservatives as the 112th Congress moves into DC, we must say goodbye to one of our favorite punch lines, White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs. The charisma challenged buffoon was always good for a few laughs. But, what is overlooked is how spectacularly good he was at his job–assuming that you understand what his job actually was. Gibberish protected his president. The job, as he saw it, was to divert and deflect attention away from Obama’s outrageous behavior and disastrous policies. Never give a direct answer to a question. Dodge, weave...
