The Canton restaurant, which opened in the Can Company building in 2009, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on May 20 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. Baltimore officials are estimating the city's costs from April rioting at $20 million. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's administration will ask the city's Board of Estimates to approve a $20 million supplement to the city's 2015 budget to pay for overtime, equipment and public works costs run up during the civil unrest that came to a head April 27. The requested riot costs are the first time city officials have offered a public estimate.
