R.I. (WPRI) – Rhode Island is now just 157 residents away from losing one of its two seats in the U.S. House, which would give the state a single vote there for the first time since George Washington was president, according to an analysis of newly released population data. Kimball Brace, the reapportionment expert who has been involved in drawing legislative and congressional districts in Rhode Island since the early 1980s, ran the numbers Wednesday after the U.S. Census Bureau announced Rhode Island had added about 2,000 residents between July 2016 and July 2017.

Democrats are attacking Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s credibility after the Department of Justice released text messages showing a top FBI agent on both the Clinton email investigation and the Russia probe rooting for Clinton while he was investigating her and discussing an unknown “insurance policy” against Trump in case he won the election. The pro-Clinton, anti-Trump messages were, ironically, discovered as part of an investigation into the DOJ and FBI launched by the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General (IG) in response to Democratic politicians demanding a probe into possible anti-Clinton bias at the FBI. Democratic politicians and...

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Joseph A. Trillo, the former Republican state lawmaker who became the leading Rhode Island advocate for President Donald Trump, said Tuesday he will run for governor as an independent, shocking many in the party he is leaving and adding a new wrinkle to the developing 2018 race. “To win with my message in Rhode Island I will need Democratic support. I feel this can only be accomplished by shedding party politics and running as an independent,” Trillo said as he formally launched his campaign on radio station WPRO Tuesday afternoon. “I feel that my message is more...

Bakery owners and a chef are pushing fairness, equity and hoping to change the status quo. Debates on racism are raging today. You’ve seen the images and read the stories of what’s happening around the country. Very close to home, in Providence, bakery owners and a chef are addressing difficult issues that are simmering in their businesses. The hospitality community, it seems, is hardly immune to many forms of racism. Last week, an argument between patrons at Seven Stars Bakery on Hope Street took on racial overtones that the store manager didn’t recognize and deal with. A woman of color...

Cicilline, who is gay, tweeted out shortly after Wednesday's announcement that transgender service members are heroes. The Republican president should "stop using them as political props," he wrote. Authorities say twin 97-year-old sisters apparently froze to death after falling down outside a Rhode Island home, one of them while coming to the rescue of the other. Barrington Police say Jean Haley, of Barrington, and Martha Williams, of East Providence, died Saturday. Police say the twins had returned to Haley's home with their 89-year-old sister, who is also from Barrington, Friday night after they had dinner together. Some time after the younger sister left, Williams was going to her car. Police say she fell in the driveway. When Haley went to call for help, authorities say, she tripped on...

It's not every day that the Wall Street Journal's right-leaning opinion section swoons over a Democratic politician. Gina Raimondo's outspoken championing of tax and regulator reform have made her the rare exception. Gushing over the Rhode Island governor in a November article titled, "An Island of Rationality in Blue-State New England," opinion writer Allysia Finley praised Raimondo's focus on regulatory and tax reform, painting her as a wonky, business-friendly Democrat at odds with a left-wing base committed to fighting battles over social justice issues. "This year’s election has spurred soul-searching within the Democratic Party," she wrote. "A debate rages between...

Hundreds of women, girls and other supporters proudly donned their yoga pants Sunday afternoon as they peacefully paraded around the Rhode Island neighborhood of a man who derided the attire as tacky and ridiculous. Alan Sorrentino says the response to the letter to the editor, printed in The Barrington Times Wednesday, has been “vicious” and that he’s received death threats. He implored marchers to stay away from his home and maintained the letter was meant to be humorous. But organizers say the so-called yoga pants parade wasn’t a protest against Sorrentino specifically but part of a bigger movement against misogyny...

America’s first offshore wind power plant will cost about $17,600 dollars to build per home it will power. Three miles off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, the wind farm is supposed to generate enough energy to power 17,000 homes, but will cost $300 million to build five turbines. This cost is just to build the turbines, not to operate them. The extremely high cost of offshore wind doesn’t worry environmentalists and progressives, however, because, as Salon.com says about the project, “it’s the precedent that counts.” Despite the extremely high cost, federal officials want to power a whooping 23...
