One brave woman in Illinois was arrested last week for standing up for herself in the face of tyranny. Pancake tyranny. Denny's customer Natasha West was sharing an innocent plate of all-you-can-eat pancakes with her friends when a waitress approached her and told her that wasn't allowed. Instead of backing down, West decided to defend her right to share pancakes. Unfortunately, she dodged the check (not cool) and tried to hit the waitress (super not cool) and was subsequently arrested. Some people are just exceedingly passionate about breakfast foods.

Donald Trump, as many people on the left and even some on the right agree, is undoubtedly and intentionally making controversial remarks on cultural, racial and religious issues. In 2012, blacks committed 560,600 acts of violence against whites (excluding homicide), and whites committed 99,403 acts of violence (excluding homicide) against blacks, according to data from the National Crime Victimization Survey provided to the author. Harris-Stowe State University must pay a former full-time education instructor $4.85 million in damages related to her racial bias claims, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. A St. Louis circuit court ruled that the historically black university discriminated against Beverly Wilkins, who is white, when it fired her in 2010. Wilkins said one administrator in particular, Latisha Smith, a former dean and department head, failed to follow a reduction in force policy in pegging her for termination over several other black faculty members. A student at Columbia University is urging the school to inject more diversity into its required courses, claiming she suffered severe emotional trauma from reading too many books by and about white people.

University President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 agreed to the modified demands of student protestors on Thursday evening. He signed the document at about 8:20 p.m., approximately 32 hours after students in the Black Justice League began a sit-in in his office and after significant negotiations over the content of the demands.

In the wake of protests at the University of Missouri, students of color at Guilford College are rallying against perceived racism on their campus. Guilford College is in Greensboro, North Carolina. When I was brought up in America it was a nation very different from the one I live in today. I was taught that everyone should be treated with respect and that respect must be the foundation for all of my interactions. Living according to the Christian belief of doing no harm to others became a part of everyday life. It's bad enough having a state hold an election that is racially discriminatory. Now we have a judge willing to allow it to move forward. That would be federal district court Judge J. Michael Seabright (a George W. Bush appointee, surprisingly enough).
