The Days Inn Penn State had an unexpected late check-in early Friday morning. A deer found its way into the downtown State College hotel by entering through the automatic doors by the lobby off South Pugh Street, police said. According to State College police, at about 3:45 a.m., the deer entered the building and became trapped in the bathroom hallway of the adjoining Mad Mex restaurant. Surveillance video showed the deer sprinting past the check-in counter as an employee watched. Pennsylvania Game Commission officers were called to handle the animal, police said. After attempting to tranquilize the deer but failing,...

In two separate Commonwealth Court rulings this week, Judge Anne Covey denied an NCAA and Penn State motion for a protective order and ordered the NCAA to make President Mark Emmert available to give a deposition. The NCAA and the university had asked for the order to protect confidentiality of “certain discovery materials” in the lawsuit brought by state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Benner Township, and state Treasurer Rob McCord that tries to ensure the $60 million in fine money levied against Penn State by the NCAA remains in Pennsylvania. Covey declined that in an order dated Wednesday. “Defendants have demonstrated...

The NCAA and Penn State lost a key battle in the ongoing question of the legality of the hotly contested consent decree that levied historic sanctions against the university after the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. On Friday, Commonwealth Court Judge Anne Covey issued a ruling on the September motion from the defendants to dismiss the lawsuit brought by state Sen. Jake Corman and state Treasurer Rob McCord. That suit protested the consent decree and asked that the $60 million in fines the decree dictated stay in Pennsylvania, backed up by Corman’s Endowment Act legislation. In filing the motion...

Penn State students and fans Saturday showed support for late coach Joe Paterno with a “Joe-Out” – wearing clothing or displaying images of the Hall of Famer at the Nittany Lions' football game. As a Penn State alumnus, I am proud of my university and I remain proud of the work that JoePa did on and – more importantly – off the football field, with respect to inspiring students and improving academics at the institution.Yet there remains in the public sphere this erroneous belief that JoePa was a conspirator in the alleged cover-up of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Sandusky, a...

A Centre County Court of Common Pleas judgment was posted by the prothonotary’s office Thursday, giving the Paterno family and its co-filers the news they had been waiting for. “Plaintiffs have standing to challenge the consent decree,” the court documents said. Judge John Leete’s 39-page decision is based on arguments made earlier this year in the case brought by the Paternos, four members of the Penn State board of trustees, four members of the university faculty, and former football players and coaches against the NCAA and Penn State regarding the consent decree, the contract that led to the historic sanctions...

The Penn State Nittany Lions are eligible to play in a bowl game this season after the NCAA ruled they are satisfied with the athletic department’s progress in ensuring it functions with integrity. “Penn State’s commitment to the integrity of its athletics department and its progress toward meeting the requirements of the Consent Decree are clear,” said Northern Arizona President Rita Hartung Cheng via NCAA.org, who chaired Monday’s Executive Committee meeting. “We thank Senator Mitchell for his meticulous and exhaustive work over the past two years. Mitchell’s efforts and the dedication of Penn State officials made today’s decisions possible.” Penn...

In writing a biography about his father, Jay Paterno makes the point quickly that the book is not an attempt to canonize Joe Paterno: "I know all too well that he was human, an imperfect being." He also says that the book is for journalism students. "In a world where the pressure to be first often outweighs the responsibility to be right, I hope you always look in your heart and pursue the truth. It is the most solemn responsibility of freedom of the press. Realize your mistakes will have consequences for real people." Here is an excerpt of Paterno...

IN HINDSIGHT, Joe Paterno wrote, the day after he got fired with a phone call, he wished he had done more. He had not committed a crime, he had not witnessed a crime, he had reported what sounded like a crime to his superiors. The haters jumped all over that sentence, like it was some kind of a confession that the legendary Penn State football coach had somehow enabled Jerry Sandusky to sexually abuse those kids, while he looked the other way. The haters spent a lot less time debating the note he scribbled on a pad before going to...

CHICAGO -- There's a statement to be made, a huge one at Penn State. A nation's outrage may not have diminished over the Jerry Sandusky scandal but the story is certainly off the front page. It was two years ago this month that the NCAA overreached into a sordid criminal matter, forever changing history. So much upheaval, so much collateral damage. The group of innocents from that day two years ago are still being punished. They don't talk about it much anymore, but they live it each day. "I think we've done everything right," Penn State linebacker Mike Hull said....

Penn State fans living in State College should run — not walk — to the Barnes & Noble on Benner Pike if they want to grab a copy of Jay Paterno’s new book before it potentially gets pulled from the shelves. Penn State athletic director Dave Joyner announced his retirement Tuesday, ending a turbulent 31-month tenure that the former football player and wrestler himself once described as a "war zone." Joyner's term, which began a week after the board of trustees on which he served fired Joe Paterno, will end Aug. 1. Penn State said it will conduct a national search for a new athletic director. According to the Chicago Tribune, Penn State has inquired about Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips.

Penn State’s longtime fencing coach, who was fired last year allegedly for retaliating against a staff member who had reported a player for a drug violation, wants his job back and more than $3 million in damages, according to a federal lawsuit he has filed. Emmanuil Kaidanov, who spent 30 years as Penn State’s fencing coach, is suing the university, athletic director Dave Joyner and athletics integrity officer Julie Del Giorno for wrongful termination, breach of contract and violation of his constitutional and civil rights, among other claims. Philadelphia-based attorney Alvin de Levie alleges the defendants conspired to fire his...

Penn State University located in State College, Pennsylvania is notorious for their seemingly bottomless pitcher of school spirit. After all, students at the University are even tailgating their final exams. Complete with hot dogs and encouraging signs. This photo from Onward State's Facebook page has been making the rounds this week: Stephen Pianovich, pictured above, is graduating this May and masterminded the plan to tailgate a final. It was on his senior year bucket list. In an email to Business Insider, he said: We got some confused looks from people walking and driving by, but nobody from the university or...
