Fraud prevention officers have sent a new guide to universities warning students they could face jail for telling “white lies” on their CVs to make them more impressive. Entitled Don’t Finish Your Career Before It Starts, the guide warns that embellishments like inflating grades and inventing extra-curricular activities can be classed as “fraud by false representation” and carry a maximum 10-year jail sentence. It says that cases referred to the fraud prevention service CIFAS stay on file for six years, so applicants might also be flagged up if they attempt to apply for other jobs. …

In a proposal that could have a far-reaching impact on the Black community, Attorney General Eric Holder is urging the U.S. Sentencing Commission to cut the sentences of as many as 20,000 federal prisoners serving time for nonviolent drug offenses. It is Holder’s latest move to reform the sentencing guidelines that he has said disproportionately affect African-American males. A Sacramento man accused of beating, choking and hanging his pet dogs has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison. A jury in March convicted Robert Lee Brian, 49, of three counts of felony animal cruelty, one count of assault and one count of criminal threat. He was sentenced Friday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White. Brian was arrested Oct. 7, 2013, for assaulting and threatening to shoot a female roommate after an early morning argument. Rene Lima-Marin had been free for nearly 6 years. Living a good life with his wife and children since his release in 2008, but that was all about to change for the convicted armed robber. Marin, originally from Aurora, Colorado opened the door this past January, 2014 only to discover the police who were there to arrest him.
