  • The $900 Billion Stimulus Package That Trump Bashed Is Being Flown To Florida For His Signature

The roughly $900 billion stimulus package is on its way to President Donald Trump for his signature, though it’s unclear whether he will sign the bill that would deliver aid to Americans, mutliple news outlets reported on Thursday. The massive 5,593-page bill, which includes the $1.4 trillion omnibus, is being flown on the plane to Florida, where Trump is staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort for Christmas...
  • One way Trump could block the stimulus bill: A pocket veto

With time running out before the end of Congress’s current session, there’s one tool that President Donald Trump could use to block a new stimulus bill without outright rejecting it: a pocket veto. As Fox News reporter Chad Pergram explains, the name of this veto comes from presidents’ ability to effectively table bills and put them in their “pocket.” As laid out in the Constitution, if the president does not sign a bill within 10 days of receiving it (excluding Sundays) and Congress adjourns during that time, the bill is considered vetoed...
  • Trump throws wrench into COVID relief by saying he won't sign bipartisan bill

President Donald Trump is giving both Democrats and Republicans a headache on Tuesday after the shocking announcement on Twitter that he will not sign the COVID-19 relief bill negotiated in the Senate and House for months. He had been expected to sign the bipartisan deal this week. ***** The president asks that the bill be reworked in order to give each American a $2,000 stimulus check instead of the $600 that was negotiated. Democrats had called for more money, but Republicans pushed back on the higher amount. ***** "The $900 billion package provides hardworking taxpayers with only $600 each in...
  • In for a Penny, in for Impound (almost line-item veto)

Plenty of Republicans remain bitter that their party passed that bloated $1.3 trillion omnibus—almost as bitter as President Trump, who felt pressured to sign it. But this fight doesn’t have to be over. Across Washington, principled conservatives are noodling with an idea that—if done right—could be a political winner. It’s a chance for Republicans to honor their promises of spending restraint and redeem themselves with a base turned off by the omnibus blowout. It’s an opening for the GOP to highlight the degree to which Democrats used the bill to hold the military hostage to their own domestic boondoggles. And...
  • Obama sends foreclosure docs bill back to Congress (pocket veto)

President Barack Obama has rejected a bill that the White House fears could worsen the mounting problems caused by flawed or misleading documents used by banks in home foreclosures. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that Obama is sending a newly passed bill back to Congress to be fixed because the current version has "unintended consequences on consumer protections." The bill would loosen the process for providing a notary's seal to documents and allow them to be done electronically. It would also foreclosure and other documents to be accepted among multiple states. Consumer advocates and state officials had...

With all the battering prosecutors have taken recently from judges who worry they are too cavalier with the rights of defendants, it’s worth noting a disputed case where the prosecutors apparently got it right – but the judge won’t admit it.In early 2009, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia appeared poised to dismiss a criminal contempt of court case against a confessed supporter of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group. In a Feb. 20, 2009, hearing, Brinkema harrumphed about the government’s contempt case against former University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian, saying there was...

The first veto of the Obama presidency was not supposed to be a big deal, but President Obama's rejection of an obscure spending bill late last month is raising some unexpected constitutional questions. Mr. Obama's use of both a "pocket veto" and a regular veto on a stopgap spending bill approved by Congress Dec. 19 has at least one leading scholar questioning the move as a possible stealth White House power grab. The Constitution "simply doesn't give the president a multiple-choice option" on how to veto a bill, said Robert Spitzer, chairman of the political science department at State University...

I'm not a legal scholar, be gentle. :) Pocket veto - The Constitution grants the President 10 days to review a measure passed by the Congress. If the President has not signed the bill after 10 days, it becomes law without his signature. However, if Congress adjourns during the 10-day period, the bill does not become law. MCA passed September 28th, 2006 Congress ADJOURNS SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2006 Bill signed Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 . So...my question is, why is this scenario not a problem? Thanks in advance for pointing out what is likely the obvious.
