Two pet pigeons were hanged and six others decapitated in two separate incidents at the same home, town police said. A Clark Street family called police at 6 p.m. Friday to report that someone had broken into a pigeon coop and decapitated one pigeon and hung another with a burlap rope. The family called again at 6 p.m. Saturday to report that five pigeons had been decapitated and a sixth hanged with a wire. South Windsor police said they have a lead in the eight bird deaths, but did not provide details.

HE IS known as one of the toughest boxers ever to step into the ring, but Mike Tyson has revealed a softer side after emerging to champion the cause of pigeon fanciers. The former heavyweight champion of the world is fighting the corner of bird lovers in Phoenix, Arizona, in a dispute over the number of pigeons they are allowed to keep at their houses. Tyson, who keeps his own collection of 350 largely rare and exotic breeds at his home in the desert city, surprised everyone by turning up at a council meeting earlier this week to denounce a proposal...

Papers have been flapping with new headlines about the latest in a long line of alleged dinosaur ancestors of birds. This one is claimed to be a sensational dinosaur with feathers on its hind legs, thus four ‘wings’.1 This was named Microraptor gui—the name is derived from words meaning ‘little plunderer of Gu’ after the paleontologist Gu Zhiwei. Like so many of the alleged feathered dinosaurs, it comes from Liaoning province of northeastern China. It was about 3 feet (1 meter) long from its head to the tip of its long tail, but its body was only about the size...

How do homing pigeons navigate? They follow roads By Caroline Davies (Filed: 05/02/2004) Researchers have cracked the puzzle of how pigeons find their way home: they just follow the main roads. Zoologists now believe the phrase "as the crow flies" no longer means the shortest most direct route between two points. They say it is likely that crows and other diurnal birds also choose AA-suggested routes, even though it makes their journeys longer. Some pigeons stick so rigidly to the roads that they even fly round roundabouts before choosing the exit to lead them back to their lofts. Animal behaviouralists...

An advert for a self-proclaimed ‘evil’ car featuring a pigeon-bashing bonnet has been slammed by animal charities. The advert shows a pigeon about to swoop down from a tree to deposit its load on a newly-polished Ford Sportka. As it gets close to the car the bonnet springs up, strikes the bird and catapults it across the road to its death.Pigeon fanciers have been quick to condemn the advert, which appears on the Ford UK website.Brian Tattersall, president of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association, has called for the advert to be banned.“It is in incredibly bad taste,” he said.“The pigeon finishes up...

THE Austrian army - fed up with enemy troops being able to listen in on its radio communications - has decided to reactivate its corps of carrier pigeons. Years after armies across the world sent their faithful pigeon brigades into a well-deserved retirement, the Austrians have decided a more traditional way of getting messages back from the frontline has a place in modern warfare. They are expected to be used when satellite communications go down, computer links are broken or the enemy is thought to be intercepting radio conversations. "Pigeons never stop working when there’s a power cut, can’t be...

JERSEY CITY, N.J.--Things went wrong at a Sept. 11 anniversary ceremony last week when dozens of white pigeons were released. Some of the birds got tangled in onlookers' hair or fell into the Hudson River. Several were injured later when they crashed into office windows, and others were found dead. Instead of getting homing pigeons, organizers of the Sept. 11 service bought their birds at a poultry shop. -Article Ends-

After this weekend, we all have new reason to worship Ozzy Osbourne. While hamming it up as one of the stars of the annual glitzfest known as the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, the heavy metal papa was asked what message he wanted to pass on to the president. Some of Hollywood's beautiful people, puffed up with self-importance (among other things), would have felt the need to twitter portentously about their current cause celèbre. Not Ozzy. He's his own cause celèbre, and all he wants is dual-citizenship. " I want to be American," he called out. "America is the...
