It’s official. An invasive Burmese python captured in the Everglades over the weekend has broken the state record measuring 18.9 feet long. The previous record was 18.8 feet long. Ryan Ausburn, a contracted python hunter with the South Florida Water Management District and Kevin “Snakeaholic” Pavlidis, a contracted python hunter with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, captured the monster sized python on Friday, Oct. 2 along the L-28 Tieback Canal about 35 miles west of Miami. On social media, Pavlidis wrote, “On Friday night, we pulled this BEAST of a snake out of waist-deep water in the middle of...
  • WATCH: Pro surfer Matt Wilkinson narrowly escapes shark encounter thanks to drone alert

The shark came within inches of Wilkinson before deciding to dart the other way and head towards the Australian east coast. The whole thing was caught on video via a drone that is part of an Australian shark warning system. The drone is also what alerted Wilkinson that something else was in the water with him. Officials said the shark may have been deterred from attacking Wilkinson because of the "unfamiliar touch of a leg rope" that was hanging off the board or the noise of the drone flying above.

Cats have a reputation for standoffishness, especially compared with dogs, but if you find your feline friend a little hard to bond with, maybe you're just not speaking their language. Never fear - new research has shown that it's not so difficult. You just need to smile at them more. Not the human way, by baring your teeth, but the cat way, by narrowing your eyes, and blinking slowly. By observing cat-human interactions, scientists were able to confirm that this expression makes cats - both familiar and strange - approach and be receptive to humans. "As someone who has both...

Damage to the retina is the leading cause of blindness in humans, affecting millions of people around the world. Unfortunately, the retina is one of the few tissues we humans can't grow back. Unlike us, other animals such as zebrafish are able to regenerate this tissue that's so crucial to our power of sight. We share 70 percent of our genes with these tiny little zebrafish, and scientists have just discovered some of the shared genes include the ones that grant zebrafish the ability to grow back their retinas. "Regeneration seems to be the default status, and the loss of...

Tasmanian devils, the carnivorous marsupials whose feisty, frenzied eating habits won the animals cartoon fame, have returned to mainland Australia for the first time in some 3,000 years. Gabriel said Aussie Ark aims for devils eventually to live in non-protected areas in mainland Australia, with the hope the devils will contribute to keeping cat and fox populations under control. “There is an argument that by putting devils into a situation where you stop the other carnivores scavenging is that those animals, like cats and foxes, will simply start hunting. You could actually make a conservation problem where it didn’t exist...

“One morning we had the door open letting the dogs come and go and looked up and he was standing in the living room" 👋🐓 =========================================================================== Chaz Sanders and her family were relaxing at home one day in the beginning of September when, out of nowhere, a stray rooster wandered onto their property. Everyone was immediately confused. “We don’t have any neighbors other than family for about 2 miles so we have no idea how he got there,” Sanders told The Dodo. The rooster, later named Ronnie, kept his distance at first, but after a few days he decided that...

The first-ever albino shark has been captured off Britain, near the Isle Of Wight, British news agency SWNS reports. Jason Gillespie was deep-sea fishing in the area when he spotted the remarkable three-foot tope shark. “I’ve been fishing for 30 years and I’ve never seen one like that,” Gillespie, 50, said. “It’s the fish of a lifetime, one in a million.” The tope shark, or school shark, has a condition called leucism that results in loss of pigmentation. Leucism occurs when some or all pigment cells fail to develop during differentiation, so part or all of the animal’s body surface...

In a chilling video that’s become popular online, a mountain lion in California has been captured on video watching children while they ride their bikes and play outside. The predatory cat was captured on video when Timothy Kerrisk noticed a large-sized animal crouching outside his home in Pacifica and peering through his front gate. Kerrisk told KRON4 News that he didn’t realize it was a mountain lion until he tried to scare it off. “I thought it was somebody’s dog that had gotten into the yard and I was like, “hey get out of here! then it turned and that’s...

Jay did receive some love from the likes of elk hunting legend, Cameron Hanes, along with a handful of former teammates. Former Chicago Bears tight end Zack Miller commented “Pew pew!! Or was it...

A 17-foot, 2-inch great white shark weighing an astounding 3,541 pounds was captured Friday in the Northwest Atlantic by researchers with OCEARCH. “She is a very old creature, a proper Queen of the Ocean and a matriarch. She has all the scars, healed wounds and discolorations that tell a deep, rich story of her life going back years,” Fischer told McClatchy News. “You feel different when you’re standing beside a shark of that size compared to the ones in the 2,000-pound range. It’s an emotional, humbling experience that can make you feel small. You feel insignificant standing next to such...

President Donald Trump can thank cats for his treatment of a drug called Remdesivir for COVID-19. Remdesivir, a drug from Gilead Sciences, was first released to treat Ebola but with only modest success, and sat on a shelf until Dr. Niels Pedersen, legendary feline researcher at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine sought permission to utilize the drug in a clinical trial for cats who are stricken with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). As Pedersen often did, he approached the non-profit Winn Feline Foundation for funding. It is the novel human corona virus (or SARS CoV-2) that causes...

A bridge inspector is being praised for rescuing a dog stuck high above the Mississippi River over the weekend. Nataluk, an avid mountain climber and a vice president and lead engineer for the Stantec company, has been inspecting and climbing bridges for over 23 years. “I go camping and climbing all over with my family and dog. I’ve had to bring my own dog across rivers and even haul him up peaks and overtime I’ve figured out how to make makeshift harnesses,” he said. When Nataluk climbed down to her, the canine quickly warmed up to him and he was...

We all love our dogs and consider them to be an important part of our family. That is why when our dogs get old or sick, there isn’t anything that we wouldn’t do for them. We all would happily go the extra mile to make our dogs’ lives easier and happier because we want them to know that they mean the world to us. For most people, that is never a hesitation. And there was one dog owner who was caught on camera doing the sweetest thing possible for his ailing pooch. While Bryan Thompson was out talking a...

NV Energy and the Nevada Division of Forestry are working with grazing goats to prevent wildfire threats along the Clear Creek watershed in Carson City. More than 300 goats will be spending eighty days on the hillsides near Carson City chomping away dead grass, trees, and other fire fuels. "We've done machines, we've done man-power, and now we're in the grazing stages of our Natural Disaster Protection Plan," says Mark Regan, Fire Mitigation Specialist with NV Energy. "These goats are mapped out across more than 100 acres and will be out here getting to places machines or crews couldn't normally...

LONDON — A British zoo has separated five foul-mouthed parrots who keepers say have been encouraging one another to swear. Billy, Eric, Tyson, Jade and Elsie joined Lincolnshire Wildlife Centre’s colony of 200 gray parrots in August, and soon revealed a penchant for blue language. “We are quite used to parrots swearing, but we’ve never had five at the same time,” said the zoo’s chief executive, Steve Nichols. “Most parrots clam up outside, but for some reason these five relish it.”

This poor child just wanted to scoot down a hill, to feel the breeze and the rumble of his wheels against pavement. Instead, he got chased down by a bird looking for a fight. The kid, apparently named Max, screamed and screamed as the bird dive-bombed him. Who knows what possessed that bird, but the child's screams really are fitting for 2020. According to ViralHog, where the video was published, the boy's father said this took place in Warilla, New South Wales, Australia. "My son and I went riding our scooter and pushbikes," the father said, according to the video...
