The “Progressive” overreach is now heading straight off the cliff — have a nice ride: Centrist Democrats were wiped out in the 2014 elections and in their absence emerged a resurgent liberal movement, embodied most recently by the surprisingly competitive presidential campaign of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. But the suddenly ascendant left — its populist overtones becoming part of the mainstream Democratic pitch — is worrying Democrats who want to compete on Republican-leaning turf. The party lost every competitive gubernatorial and Senate race in the South last year. And Democrats didn’t fare much better in the heartland. Now, as Bernie Sanders’...

Brownback wins; Paul Davis concedes.
-
I'm not a fan of Governor Sam Brownback, but four more years of Brownback is preferable to four years of someone who is as out of touch with reality as Paul Davis is Davis talks about Brownback's cuts in education spending, but seems totally unaware of the fact those cuts have been restored. He pledges to restore the cuts that have already been restored. He and his supporters don't understand economics. They talk about Kansas job creation rate as if that was the most important measure of the state's economy. Kansas unemployment is only 4.8% which many economists consider within...

Just weeks ago, Democrats in Kansas were salivating over the possibility that Paul Davis would be the next governor in the state and independent Greg Orman would be a new U.S. senator. Not any longer. In fact, rather suddenly, Republicans are thinking they are going to have an enjoyable Nov. 4 night of watching election returns. ThatÂ’s because they now have growing reasons to think Gov. Sam Brownback is going to defeat Davis and win re-election. That would be unfortunate, given just how badly BrownbackÂ’s economic policies have hurt the state. And they are giddy over the reversal in the...

Kansas Democratic nominee for governor, Paul Davis Kansas voters will soon go to the polls and decide who they want to govern our state for the next four years. The question is what criteria will be used to fill this position? While economic issues such as business, jobs, and taxes always weigh heavily in our state, Kansans, more often than not, attempt to find leadership through people of faith and good moral values. In 1998, I was a member of the Montgomery County Drug Task Force. One of several jobs I performed within this multi-agency group was that of serving...

Kansas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis said Tuesday that the list of top Republicans in the state has increased from 100 to 500 members. Davis made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday, accompanied by the leaders of the group of Republicans who support Davis and oppose Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, according to the Lawrence Journal-World. The conference was to highlight the support Davis has begun to receive from 180 ex lawmakers and 360 educators, community leaders, and business leaders who are part of the group, Republicans for Kansas Values. As TPM previously noted, in July the more...

There's been nothing but bad news lately for Gov. Sam Brownback. The FBI is investigating close associates of the Kansas Republican, including his former chief of staff, for possible lobbying and fundraising improprieties, as well as sweetheart deals involving state business. Brownback dismisses it as a "smear" campaign. Nothing may come of it, but it's certainly made for some bad press. Also, the state's bond rating was cut earlier this month amid plunging revenues, lending credibility to his opponents' arguments that his massive tax-cut packages have damaged the state. "The polls show that he's very vulnerable for somebody who should...

Why does the universe seem so fine-tuned for the emergence of life – including intelligent life capable of asking that “why” question? Believers simply say that God did it, while scientists are trying to come up with complicated extradimensional multiverse theories to explain our lucky break. Theoretical physicist Paul Davies takes a completely different tack in a new book titled "Cosmic Jackpot." He argues that the cosmos has made itself the way it is, stretching backward in time to the very beginning to focus in on “bio-friendliness.” Davies admits that the idea has theological overtones - but that's nothing new...

ACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- Paul Davis, a singer and songwriter whose soft rock hit "I Go Crazy" stayed on the charts for months after its release in 1977, died Tuesday. He was 60. Davis died of a heart attack at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, the city where he grew up, cousin James Edwards said. Davis' other popular hits included "65 Love Affair;" "You're Still New To Me," a country duet with Marie Osmond; and "Ride 'Em Cowboy." His 1977 album "Singer of Songs -- Teller of Tales" featured the ballad "I Go Crazy." The song slowly climbed the charts,...
