Today in 1933 -- Charles Tindley Died ======== American pastor and hymn writer Charles Albert Tindley's story is an amazing one of striving to overcome hardship and succeeding, by the grace of God. He was born in 1851, the son of Charles and Esther Tindley. Charles's father was a slave, but his mother was a free woman. Thus, he was born free but brought up among enslaved people. His mother died when he was 4 years old, and he was separated from his father a year later. Charles was raised by his Aunt Caroline. In that day, white slave owners...

The culmination of a comeback that has been gaining steam over the past year, the former Mars Hill pastor announced the news of The Trinity Church on Monday by email, Twitter and a new website. In a folksy video on the site, which begins with a “howdy” from Driscoll, the pastor said he and his wife, Grace, sitting by his side, were “hoping, trusting, praying, planning and also a little” — he made a jokey grimace — “worrying about planting a church here.”

Republican presidential candidate and Texas Senator Ted Cruz reunited for the first time in decades with the pastor who baptized him and led his father to Jesus in the 1970s, during a campaign stop in Tennessee this week. For Cruz, he saw his stop through Murfreesboro on Monday to speak at a campaign rally as being more than just an opportunity to share his conservative views with potential voters. As Cruz took the stage to speak to the crowd, he had just one question for the audience. "I was told Pastor Gaylon Wiley was here. Is that right?" Cruz asked....

TALLLAHASSEE – In what could become a rallying point for social conservatives next year, state Rep. Scott Plakon, R-Longwood, filed legislation Monday to prevent clergy members and churches from being sued because they refuse to preside over same-sex marriages. He filed HB 43 in reaction to this summer's landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling same-sex marriage legal throughout the country. "We think that this is something that people on all sides of the debate should at least be able to agree on is that pastors and religious practitioners should never be compelled to perform a ceremony that violates their sincerely...

While American evangelists such as Franklin Graham and Rick Warren are not afraid of speaking on sensitive topics such as same-sex marriage, abortion, or political strife, Joel Osteen prefers not to discuss those while at the pulpit, saying those topics often "turn people off." During a recent interview with WBUR's "Here & Now" radio program, Osteen said everybody has his or her own calling, but tackling politically controversial issues is not something that he has been called out to do. "I have friends who are very political. They're pastors and that's what their thing is. But I think sometimes, in...

LEXINGTON — A former pastor charged with molesting a teenage boy from his church is asking that his upcoming trial be moved from Rockbridge County. Larry McKinley Clark’s attorney argued Tuesday that extensive publicity about the case would make it all but impossible to seat an impartial jury. Complicating the problem for Clark, attorney Dirk Padgett said, that news media coverage includes that of an earlier trial in which Clark was convicted of sexually abusing a second young parishioner. “I do think it raises it to a different level if [potential jurors] are aware of a conviction,” Padgett argued during...
