HARTFORD — Senate Republicans outlined a list of proposals on Wednesday that would expand public-private partnerships, create new tax incentives – and possibly add to Connecticut’s coffers. The lawmakers proposed several bills that aim to lower government costs by implementing public-private partnerships with state human services agencies. State Sen. A new report looks at the state of the legal profession in 2030, and it doesn't look too pretty as far as employment is concerned, io9 reports. The Internal Revenue Service audits fewer than 1 percent of large business partnerships, according to a government report released Tuesday. That means some of Wall Street’s largest hedge funds and private equity firms are largely escaping close scrutiny by the IRS, said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. The Government Accountability Office says the number of large businesses organized as partnerships has more than tripled since 2002, yet hardly any get audited. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday released plans to boost enrollment in engineering programs at state universities. The plan appeared aimed at appeasing the state engineers' union and Democrats, who have balked at outsourcing government jobs to design roads, schools, levees and other projects. In a statement, Schwarzenegger said California faces a shortfall of more than 20,000 engineers. Jeffrey Skilling, former Enron chief executive, was unhappy at efforts by directors to obtain more details of the failed energy group's controversial off-balance sheet partnerships, according to one board member.
