Washingtonians got their first close-up look Saturday at the giant panda cub Bei Bei, the new star of the National Zoo. Until now, the cub could be viewed only through the so-called Panda Cam, a video hookup that has allowed people to watch the now five-month-old cub since its birth. A line of visitors formed outside the panda enclosure on Saturday morning before opening time to get a look at the ball of fur inside its soundproof glass enclosed pen.

Nothing can warm the frozen wiring of your brain on a cold winter morning like a cheerful Christmas-y puzzle. But as much as you'd like to think that it's easy to spot one panda amidst a sea of smiling, carrot-nosed snowmen, it's actually pretty frustrating. Hungarian artist Gergely Dudás (also known as Dudolf) shared this puzzle last Wednesday and people just can't stop staring at it.

The proposal highlights increasing annual funding to $2 billion for the next 10 years with the goal of developing a cure by 2025. "The best scientific minds tell us we have a real chance to make groundbreaking progress on curing this disease and relieving the pain so many families feel every day. My plan will set us on that course," she said.

A bee farmer in Southwest China's Sichuan Province found himself helpless as a wild panda helped itself to honey straight from his hives, media reported on Wednesday. The Baoxing county villager called local authorities Tuesday after he discovered the sweet-toothed panda dipping into 10 box beehives. Authorities arrived to find the panda crouching in the corner, completely absorbed with his desert and undeterred by their presence. "This panda didn't fear people standing a meter away," said Jiang Xiandong, a local official. Concerned about how to handle China's most protected and treasured animal, the nonplussed officials eventually left the panda to...

Two painted chow chow dogs posing as pandas have been seized from a circus in northern Italy, after tricking children into handing over cash, police have said. The male and female dogs were seized by police after it became clear that they were not, in fact, pandas. To an unassuming child visiting the circus in Brescia, a small furry animal with white and black stripes may do the trick. But The Local readers may notice a distinct difference. Here is a real panda: Panda photo by Shutterstock. And here are the dogs-in-disguise: The police were not fooled, who said the...

The rancour has strained ties between Malaysia and China, whose government also has put pressure on authorities in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia's environment minister told AFP Friday that China had postponed plans to send a pair of pandas to Malaysia next week. China had agreed in 2010 to lend the two giant pandas for 10 years in Beijing's latest use of "panda diplomacy" to cement ties with other countries.

Official debrief following the return of Lady Ms China entourage: It turned out to be a somewhat more substantive swing through this massive country than expected, displaying Obamas deft ability to mix diplomacy with her personal narrative. Before flying home late Wednesday afternoon, she had raised the issues of minority rights, Internet access and religious freedom, all while charming the Chinese public by skipping rope, practicing tai chi with high school students and declaring herself awed by the nations ancient tourist sites. In other words: an awesome piece of soft diplomacy success, according to the Washington Post, as well as...

Panda blood compound 6x more powerful than current antibiotics In what could be either very good news or very bad news for our fluffy black and white friends, it's been discovered that panda blood contains an antibiotic compound that's vastly more powerful than anything we've got right now. Researchers at the Life Sciences College of Nanjing Agricultural University in China have extracted a compound called cathelicidin-AM from the blood of giant pandas. Cathelicidin-AM is what's called a gene-encoded antimicrobial peptide, a natural antibiotic that's produced by a panda's immune cells. Testing has shown that cathelicidin-AM can kill even drug resistant...

12-31-2011 19:26 BBC in hot water over 'pandagate' sexism row It was intended as a lighthearted addition to an otherwise serious list of women who made the headlines in 2011. But the BBC's inclusion of a panda in its "faces of the year" has kicked up a storm. In a media row dubbed "Pandagate" by users of Twitter, the broadcaster has included Tian Tian (Sweetie), one of two pandas who arrived at a Scottish zoo earlier this month, as its female "face" for December in an online feature. The hairy giant is named alongside women such as U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle...

Angry enough to punch a defenseless panda? Then come to New York. Every week this winter, performance artist Nate Hill dons a panda suit, heads onto the streets, and challenges members of the public to take a swing. "Hit me. Hit more hard," he urged passersby on a freezing afternoon at busy Union Square. "You know you're angry, you were angry this morning." A towering figure in white panda paw gloves, bodysuit and a head the size of a prize-winning pumpkin, the panda hopped down the sidewalk like a boxer. Hill, 33, said he thought up the persona of Punch...

A happy and healthy cub was born to Lun Lun Nov. 3, 2010, but a recent medical exam revealed the cuddly creature's gender. The exam was performed by the Zoo Atlanta veterinary team and a colleague from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The unnamed newborn weighs a mere 11 ounces and has begun to develop the species' familiar black and white panda coloration, zoo officials said. His eyes are not yet open. Adult males weigh over 300 pounds. The...
