An orchestra of young musicians have published a masterful take-down of a car company, in response to its “tired” stereotyping of youth music-making. Last week, the musicians released a video titled ‘An INFINITY Of Young Talent’, which references ‘Infiniti’, the luxury division of the car company, Nissan. Infiniti released an advert earlier this month titled ‘Beautiful Mess’, which promoted their new car, the QX60. “Quiet the chaos in style,” reads the ad’s description; the ‘chaos’ refers to the young musicians depicted in the video... The advert portrays a youth orchestra playing Richard Strauss’ tone poem, Also sprach Zarathustra. However, the...

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra publicly admonished its principal flutist for her conspiracy-laden social media posts about COVID-19 and fraud in November’s presidential election. The orchestra tweeted that it does not condone the “words or sentiments” expressed in the posts on the personal social media accounts of flutist Emily Skala. “Ms. Skala does not speak for the BSO, nor do her statements reflect the core values or code of conduct grounded in humanity and respect,” orchestra officials announced. The orchestra released the statement after being alerted to Skala’s posts by other social media users. Facebook had flagged Skala’s posts for containing...

The center released a statement Tuesday announcing an agreement with the musicians that includes pay cuts of 35 percent for the next six months, a freezing of wages for the 2020-21 season and a delay of a planned pay increase. As part of the deal, the District of Columbia Federation of Musicians, the union that represents the orchestra members, said it will drop its grievance filed against the Kennedy Center, The Washington Free...

Hee-Young Lim, a Korean cellist, launched her first CD French Cello Concertos last November. Now she is tapping into the classical music world in China. "Playing the cello feels like meditation, it becomes sort of a mirror and helps you see within yourself. And since I have no siblings and used to spend a lot of time alone reading books, my parents felt this was all good because it was almost as though I had a constant companion in the cello!" Hee-Young Lim recalled the beginning of her musical journey. The Seoul-born musician entered the Korean National University at age...

The Fabulous Philadelphians are on strike. Friday night, a crowd of about 1,000 sat in Verizon Hall waiting for the orchestra to appear for the scheduled start of the Opening Night Gala. But no Philadelphia Orchestra appeared on stage. Unbeknownst to most in the audience, the 96 musicians and two librarians belonging to American Federation of Musicians Local 77 had decided to go out on strike about an hour before curtain time. Finally, about 20 minutes after the scheduled start, orchestra president Allison B. Vulgamore came out on stage to say that no labor agreement was in place for "one...

In these times of trouble and uncertainty, when you're feeling down, when things seem insurmountable, or you're just losing faith in humanity in general, listen to the music of André Rieu, especially his music videos. His epic worldwide concerts draw thousands and celebrate the human spirit through music. I find them very uplifting, restoring my faith that humanity is still capable of doing wonderful things. I hope you do to. :-) A few of my favorites: André Rieu - You Raise me Up André Rieu - You'll Never Walk AloneAndré Rieu - Nearer, My God, to Thee (live in Amsterdam)...

The message on the phone was there waiting for me after a long day and longer week at work. The news was sad but not unexpected. Like the death of a dear aunt who had been putting up a good fight for years. The time to let her go in peace had finally arrived. The only surprising thing about the call was that it should have taken so long in coming. When it did, it came in a voice familiar from my days -- and years -- writing editorials for the Pine Bluff Commercial here in Arkansas. The voice was...

The concert tour is being considered for later this year, and the PSO, the American Middle East Institute (AMEI), Iranian officials, and the U.S. State Department are hammering out details, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazettefirst reported in January. Representatives for the PSO and AMEI visited the Islamic Republic on a preliminary trip on Sunday, the groups confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon. If the effort moves forward, the...

A soloist starts playing just a bass starts on a town plaza. Much like many of the musicians who dot downtown pedestrian malls in American cities, there is a hat on the paving stones in front of him for donations. But then comes a cello. And a bassoon. The melody becomes apparent, “Ode to Joy” Violins join in and the crowd’s cell phone cameras appear. Boys climb lampstands to see. A crowd of brass and woodwinds appear and percussion is rolled onto the plaza. This flash mob reveals itself to be the Valles Symphony Orchestra and the Lieder, Amics de...

The Minnesota Orchestra, whose musicians have been locked out since the beginning of the season, is veering toward catastrophe. A number of players have departed for other ensembles; the orchestra's use of state funds has raised serious questions and is under review; powerful board members have created a fearful atmosphere; and, as Graydon Royce reports, Osmo Vänskä, Minnesota's brilliant music director, is threatening to resign if the situation is not resolved soon. In his latest piece, Royce alludes to a column I wrote in 2010, in which I said, "For the duration of the evening of March 1st, the Minnesota...

By Vivien Schweitzer and Matthew Westphal 21 May 2007 A member of the Dubrovnik city council broke into a concert by the city's symphony orchestra earlier this month, threatened the guest conductor, and attempted to strangle and then head-butted the orchestra's chief executive, reports the website Javno.hr. The incident happened on May 11 outside the Knezev Dvor, the 15th-century Rector's Palace whose atrium is often used for performances. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kristijan Rista Savic of Wiesbaden, Germany, was playing for about 235 guests, when Marko Vuletic, a city councilor for the HSP (Croatian Party of Rights, a...

Give us racial harmony In the 1970s, most orchestras adopted the practice of blind auditions: Candidates play from behind screens [...] In the final round, once they have been winnowed down to three or four, the screens often come down so that the music director and the panel of orchestra members can meet their potential colleagues. But would a more multihued orchestra also be a more multitalented one? Absolutely, argues Aaron Dworkin, founder of the 10-year-old Michigan-based Sphinx Organization, dedicated to advancing the cause of minorities in classical music. Dworkin argues that a greater variety of musicians would bring more...
