An upstate county is blocking New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ bid to shunt Big Apple homeless residents north, calling the move yet another flagrant attempt to shift the migrant crisis elsewhere. The Democratic mayor announced last week that city housing vouchers for the homeless could now be used outside of the five boroughs — to open shelter space for the wave of migrants flooding into the city from the country’s southern border. But Republican Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente fired back with an emergency order saying no voucher would be accepted on his turf without his say-so — and...

The dramatic exit last Friday by Rep. John Katko (R-NY), who announced he would not run for reelection, may have shocked liberals but was no surprise to Trump supporters. One by one, the Republicans who voted for the second impeachment or who publicly blamed Trump for the Jan. 6th rally at the Capitol are leaving public office. Katko was the third to prematurely retire among the impeachers, and the most significant due to his seniority and otherwise bright future. He was in line to become chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee after the predicted takeover of the House by...

Oneida Indian officials who oppose the Redskins nickname as a slur will meet with NFL officials next week in New York City, a tribe spokesman said Friday. The meeting agreed to by NFL officials this month is scheduled for Wednesday in New York City, Oneida Indian Nation spokesman Brett Stagnitti told the Associated Press. ---SNIP--- Halbritter, whose tribe runs a large casino resort in Verona in central New York, says the name is degrading and has devastating effects, especially on younger Indians.

Over $83,000 in federal stimulus funds will go to the Oneida Indian Nation for a project estimated to reduce energy usage. According to Media Relations Director for the Nation Mark Emery the solar lighting project at the Village of the White Pines will reduce energy usage by more than 10,000 kilowatts of power a year benefiting the entire energy grid. National Grid did not comment on how the federally funded project could benefit other consumers and taxpayers. Emery says federal stimulus money was available to governments all around the country, including states and Indian nations, for energy conservation purposes.

WATERLOO, N.Y. --New York state has agreed to pay most of the legal fees incurred by counties in opposing Indian efforts to put land into federal trusts. Seneca County had been seeking reimbursement from the state since the trust process began a year ago. The state originally refused to pay, citing an opinion by the state attorney general's office. However, Seneca County Attorney Steven Getman said Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said this week that state law allowed reimbursement to counties for legal costs associated with defending the claims. Getman said the state agreed to pay both future costs and approximately...

Oneida Indian Nation decision applies to the Cayuga Nation's purchase of land within their land claim area on the open market. WATERLOO, N.Y. The Cayuga Indian's 25-year-old land claim will not get a second look from a federal appeals court. Seneca County Attorney Steven Getman says today's decision by the Second U-S Circuit Court of Appeals is another victory for property owners. The Cayuga Indian Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma had asked for a rehearing after the court's split decision in June. The decision said the tribe was not entitled to a 248 (m) million land claim judgment awarded by a lower-court jury. Today's decision cited an earlier U-S Supreme Court ruling in a separate case...

ONEIDA, N.Y. - Dishware maker Oneida Ltd. said Thursday it will close its remaining factory in upstate New York early next year, ending all its manufacturing of flatware because of high operating costs. The decision will cost about 500 workers their jobs, including manufacturing and managerial positions. Oneida said high operating costs of its last flatware factory in Sherrill, near Syracuse, caused substantial losses. Oneida plans to continue marketing the affected products by using independent suppliers. "For the long-term viability of our company, closing the factory dramatically lowers our costs which...
