Olivia de Havilland, who passed away in Paris at 104 this week, is best known for her role as the genteel Melanie Hamilton in the 1939 Gone with the Wind. In reality, Olivia de Havilland was anything but a pushover, on and off the screen. Before Gone with the Wind, she cavorted with Errol Flynn in The Charge of the Light Brigade and The Adventures of Robin Hood. At the time, studio bosses locked down stars in seven-year contracts, and Olivia de Havilland was the first to push back in force. When she demanded more challenging roles, Warner Brothers suspended...

“Gone with the Wind” star Olivia de Haviland, who also won an Academy Award for her role in another film, died at 104, according to her publicist, Lisa Goldberg. Goldberg told TheWrap that she died at her home in Paris, France, of natural causes. The longtime actress, who was born in 1916 in imperial Japan to British parents, played Melanie Hamilton Wilkes in “Gone with the Wind,” who had a conflict with Scarlett O’Hara, played by Vivien Leigh. She also appeared in films such as “The Adventures of Robin Hood,” and won Oscars for her performances in “To Each His...

Olivia de Havilland, the delicate beauty and last remaining star of Gone With the Wind who received her two acting Oscars after helping to take down Hollywood’s studio system with a landmark legal victory in the 1940s, died Sunday. She was 104. De Havilland died of natural causes at her home in Paris, where she had lived for more than 60 years, publicist Lisa Goldberg announced.

Olivia De Havilland, Late 2019 There are few veterans of Hollywood's Golden Age who are still around, much less still making headlines. But Olivia de Havilland, who turns 104 Wednesday (US time), was always a rule-breaker.She's part of the current furore over Gone With the Wind, since she is the only surviving star of the 1939 epic.In 2017, she also sued FX Networks over her depiction in the miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan, from exec producer Ryan Murphy. After a series of appeals, the court ultimately decided against de Havilland. The ruling represents a rare defeat for her, but serves...

After more than a year of fighting FX and Ryan Murphy over her depiction in Feud, Olivia de Havilland has kept her word and is taking her case to the Supreme Court. “We must persevere and speak truth to power,” the 102-year-old two-time Oscar winner said Friday as her attorneys petitioned SCOTUS in the ongoing legal battle. “The fight is itself important to the principle of honesty, so much in need today in the face of deliberate public confusion for selfish agendas,” she added in a statement from her Paris home (read it in full here). Having suffered a number...

Olivia de Havilland has a real-life feud brewing with FX and Ryan Murphy. “Gone With the Wind” actress de Havilland has filed a lawsuit against the cable outlet and “Feud” producer Ryan Murphy, alleging that her identity was used without her authorization in the FX miniseries, according to court papers obtained by TheWrap. The suit, filed against FX Networks and Ryan Murphy Productions in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, also alleges that the 100-year-old actress, who was portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the miniseries, was placed in a false light. In a press release issued Friday, de Havilland’s lawyers...

One would like to think that Olivia de Havilland, the last remaining cast member from “Gone With the Wind” and, indeed, the last remaining female star from Hollywood’s Golden Age, had a vibrant lunch among friends at her Paris residence to celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday, July 1. “She’s gone through life collecting friends,” film critic and author Donald Spoto, a good friend who often lunches with de Havilland, said during a visit to San Francisco in 2013. “She’ll talk about her films if you ask her, but she never turns the spotlight on herself. She’s much more interested...

The star of the Hitchcock classics "Suspicion" and "Rebecca" famously won an Oscar in 1942 over her bitter rival -- her older sister Olivia de Havilland. Joan Fontaine, the polished actress who achieved stardom in the early 1940s with memorable performances in the Alfred Hitchcock films Suspicion — for which she earned the best actress Oscar over her bitter rival, sister Olivia de Havilland — and Rebecca, has died. She was 96. THR awards analyst Scott Feinberg spoke with the actress' assistant, Susan Pfeiffer, who confirmed the death of natural causes Sunday at Fontaine's home in Carmel, Calif. Fontaine earned...

I can remember the first time I saw the Snake Pit, Hush Hush Sweet Charolette and Light in the Piazza. I was stunned at first, then I was riveted to her performance. The attention to mental illness that she brought by the Snake Pit benefited everyone. And I loved the struggle that took place in the Light in the Piazza. Parental love and worry versus giving her daughter a happy life. I wondered how many families watched that movie and got a different perspective about their grown mentally challenged kids.

Marlon Brando may have possessed the greatest talent of any American actor of the past 100 years, but for most of his career, he wasted that talent. Charley Malloy: Look, kid, I -- how much you weigh, son? When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds you were beautiful. You coulda been another Billy Conn, and that skunk we got you for a manager, he brought you along too fast. Terry Malloy: It wasn't him, Charley, it was you. Remember that night in the Garden you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, this ain't your night....
