CLEVELAND -- Eleven Cleveland Browns players knelt in a circle during the national anthem prior to Monday's preseason game against the New York Giants. STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Ohio officials say a county judge was shot and wounded as he walked toward a courthouse, and the suspect was killed when a probation officer returned fire. Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. was shot Monday morning near the county courthouse in Steubenville, along the Ohio River roughly 30 miles west of Pittsburgh. Steubenville City Manager James Mavromatis tells WTOV-TV that Bruzzese was talking after being wounded. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. Investigators didn't immediately release further information about the judge's condition or the suspect. The suspect's body could be seen lying next to...
  • Demonstrators rally at City Hall to bring down Christopher Columbus statue

    08/19/2017 5:19:52 PM PDT · by TigerClaws · 52 replies
Christopher Columbus was a villain of history and his statue should be removed, according to demonstrators who gathered today before one of several statues of the man in this city that bears his name. The hastily scheduled event at City Hall — drawing more than 100 people and no apparent counterprotestors — was in response to the clashes last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of one woman. The protest there started in response to the city’s decision to take down statues of Confederate leaders. Organizers of the Columbus rally said they are trying to stand up...

The mother of the man who allegedly plowed into a group of people protesting a white nationalist rally Saturday in Virginia said she knew her son was attending a rally -- but she thought it was a rally for President Trump, not for white nationalists. In an interview Saturday night in Toledo, Ohio, with The Associated Press, Samantha Bloom said of her son James Alex Fields Jr., "I just knew he was going to a rally. I mean, I try to stay out of his political views. You know, we don't, you know, I don't really get too involved, I...

Ohio insurers want big premium hikes next year for individual health care policies in the Affordable Care Act market, with typical average increases of 20 percent or more. Their rate requests have not yet been granted, but federal and state filings show the extent of the hikes insurers say they want -- and need -- because of expectations of costs for medical care, prescription drugs and the premiums necessary to cover these and other expenses. Insurers say they base their requests on how things went this year and last, and their projections for 2018. These rate requests, and requests in...
  • Hubbard, Ohio factory owner says she has jobs but few sober applicants

HUBBARD, Ohio – An Ohio factory owner said Saturday that though she has blue-collar jobs available at her company, she struggles to fill positions because so many candidates fail drug tests. Regina Mitchell, a co-owner of Warren Fabricating & Machining in Hubbard, Ohio, told The New York Times this week that four out of 10 applicants otherwise qualified to be welders, machinists and crane operators will fail a routine drug test. In an interview Saturday with CNN’s Michael Smerconish, Mitchell said that her requirements for prospective workers were simple. “I need employees who are engaged in their work while here,...

SHEFFIELD LAKE — Firefighters came to the rescue of an East Lake Road woman when they cut the head off her pet boa constrictor that had wrapped around her neck and was biting her face. The Fire Department would not release the name of the woman but said she was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening. In a 911 call about 2 p.m. Thursday, the woman identifies herself as a 45-year-old who has 11 snakes — all ball pythons, except the two boa constrictors she had rescued Wednesday. She told the dispatcher that the other boa constrictor...

YOUNGSTOWN - When the voice on the other end of the phone said the president of the United States wanted to meet him, Geno DiFabio, a 54-year-old lifelong resident of the South Side, was skeptical. It wasn’t a completely unreasonable possibility. Just that morning, DiFabio had appeared on a Fox News show to discuss why he, a lifelong Democrat, switched parties to throw his support fully behind then-candidate Donald Trump. The voice – a White House communications official – convinced DiFabio that the call was legitimate, and they set a time to meet ahead of the president’s rally at the...

Seven others, who ranged in age from 14 to 42 years old, were injured when the Fire Ball ride malfunctioned and sent riders flying into the air. The Marine Corps said in a statement that Jarrell, 18, enlisted on July 21 and wanted to be in the infantry or serve as a combat engineer. He...
