Two babies in California have been born with the severe birth defect microcephaly after their mothers were infected with the Zika virus while traveling in foreign countries where the virus is common, state public health officials announced Thursday. Due to privacy concerns, state officials would not release any more information about who the mothers are, where they live and where they traveled to, other than to say the cases occurred this year. They are the first reported cases of babies born with microcephaly in the state in connection with the Zika virus.

CARBONDALE, IL - A Carbondale police officer was last reported in serious condition after being shot late Sunday evening. The Carbondale Police Department says around 11:38 p.m., officers were on patrol in the 700 block of North Robert A. Stalls Street when they determined gunshots were being fired. The U.S. Justice Department is suing a suburban Philadelphia town, alleging its denial of a permit for a mosque in 2014 constituted religious discrimination. CBS News is reporting that the FBI is investigating the incident as a lone wolf terror attack. Suspect is a Somali, Mohamed Barry: CBS News has identified the suspect as Mohamed Barry, however neither 10TV nor Columbus Police have confirmed the suspect’s name. Hundreds of protesters and police took over Public Square in downtown Tuesday afternoon. Some of the larger groups began dispersing just after 5 p.m., but about 10-20 new protesters arrived with masks on. Heavy law enforcement presence remained. Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams was on hand most of the afternoon to try and keep groups calm. Williams said he was shoved by a person trying to get to another protester, however, there were no arrests and no injuries.

Boston police are being warned to check their cars before driving off after a cop's vehicle was tampered with. The officer, whose name is not being released, was driving away from the police department's District 1 station, in central Boston, yesterday when his rear wheel came off. He was not injured in the incident but when the cop took the car to the shop for repairs, a mechanic found the car had been tampered with. Someone had loosened or removed the lug nuts holding the wheel in place before he drove away. An officer has been shot at 22nd and Haskell in Kansas City, Kan. and by 2:45 p.m. one person was in custody and police had detained another person. Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler tweeted at 2:02 p.m., “We have an officer shot at 22nd & Haskell. Start prayers, unknown condition.” The officer was in critical condition. <p>COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Police in Ohio's capital city say an officer was served a sandwich containing glass shards at a restaurant, and an assault squad is investigating whether it was intentional.</p>
<p>The Columbus officer cut his mouth after biting into the sandwich served to him at a restaurant on Monday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital and held there overnight.</p>

Disturbing video released Tuesday shows a man randomly punching a 65-year-old man in the face as he’s walking along a Brooklyn Heights street. Pyongyang launched three missiles Tuesday morning in the latest in a set of controversial ballistic tests, according to South Korea’s military, which claimed the projectiles had a range of up to 600 kilometers (360 miles).
