A new poll released on the eve of Rick Santorum’s first campaign visit to Alabama shows the former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania leading in the state Republican Party presidential primary. The statewide poll conducted by Alabama State University’s Center for Leadership and Public Policy showed 22.7 percent of likely Republican voters supported Santorum, who is scheduled to make campaign appearances Thursday in Huntsville and Mobile. Former Massachussetts Gov. Mitt Romney trailed Santorum with 18.7 percent, followed by Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House from neighboring Georgia, with 13.8 percent. The telephone poll of 470 likely GOP voters showed...

Alabama’s unemployment rate fell at a record pace in November amid stepped-up efforts by President Barack Obama’s deputies to frustrate enforcement of the state’s popular new immigration reform. The state’s unemployment rate fell 0.6 percent in November to 8.7 percent, according to new state reports, partly because the state’s employers opened up jobs to Americans after shedding illegal immigrants. The unemployment rate is far below October’s rate of 9.3 percent and September’s rate of 9.8 percent. “The continued drop is proof that people — American Citizens [and] legal migrants, have suffered at the hands of politicians who choose politics over...

In a perfect instantiation of green conservatism, the Gingrich campaign has been fuelling a bandwagon entirely on Newt's hot air. It is nearly midnight, however, and therefore almost time for that bandwagon to turn back into a pumpkin (or rather, lemon), which will leave those conservatives who are a little too focused on the manufactured issue of "electability," and who had almost been persuaded to hold their noses and vote for Gingrich, to return to the drawing board in search of someone who can defeat President Obama. They will (and should) ultimately decide that the answer to their quest was...

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley endorsed Mitt Romney for president Friday, saying he has the executive experience in the private and public sectors that proves he can deal "with a broken Washington."

Newt Gingrich came out strongly for jury trials before illegal immigrants can be deported in the December 3 presidential forum sponsored by Fox News' Mike Huckabee. But the former House Speaker has refused to favor jury trials of American citizens accused of terrorism. During the forum Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi asked Gingrich if his proposal to create neighborhood boards to legalize the residency status of illegal immigrants would undermine the rule of law. Gingrich's campaign website proposes the following proposal to make illegal immigrants legal residents: "Applicants must first pass a criminal background check, and then the local committees...

"Newt Gingrich is a bad bet because he will embarrass the Republican party. He will do so through things he has already said and done, and in ways we cannot predict except to be sure — because character will out — that they will happen." Mona Charen today in NRO. Since we are writing for seasoned conservatives and their center-right sympathizers, those who value our common civilization and take pleasure in our common language, let us stipulate up front that we find former Speaker Newt Gingrich both articulate and often instructive on emerging issues, for example, the threat of an...

Fresh off his vacation, MSNBC's Pat Buchanan came out swinging Tuesday on "Morning Joe," calling former House Speaker Newt Gingrich a "political opportunist" for his comments about the proposed mosque in New York City. On Monday, Gingrich compared the building of a proposed mosque near Ground Zero to Nazis putting up "a sign next to the Holocaust Museum" or "the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor." Buchanan argued that Gingrich's controversial comments were meant to position him to the right of his potential GOP primary opponent, Sarah Palin, on the issue. VIDEO HERE

I don’t know how you feel about Newt Gingrich, but every time he is on, I’m drawn to watch him. He always has a different angle, always has something substantive to say. And that, more than anything else, explains why, with all of the turmoil and embarrassments in his personal life, a party filled with conservative people still want to hear him. It was no small tribute to him then that even out of office he was selected to give the keynote address on June 9 to the major fund-raising dinner for the Republicans in the Senate and the House....

Now that the 2006 midterm elections have almost all been decided, political observers are turning their attention toward the presidential sweepstakes in 2008. It will be the first race since 1952 that doesn’t have an incumbent president seeking re-election or vice-president looking for a promotion, leaving the field in both parties wide open. Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and John Kerry top the list of about a dozen Democrats considering a White House run and Mitt Romney, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are the names most frequently talked about for the Republican nomination. With the official end of the 1994 Republican...

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich conceded Wednesday that he might run for president in 2008, but said he will spend the coming years focusing on changes needed in the nation and less time talking about his own political ambitions. "The message I'm trying to send is we need to have a discussion over the next three years about really big changes," he said in an interview with The Associated Press. "We need some time spent by would-be political leaders talking about their vision for the future and answering big questions -- before they run out...
