  • Mattis hints at secret 'kinetic' military options for North Korea

    09/19/2017 8:15:36 PM PDT · by JP1201 · 134 replies
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis hinted that the United States still had military options left for dealing with North Korea, but did not elaborate when asked for details Monday. Most experts think a military strike on North Korea would invite a devastating response from Pyongyang. The city of Seoul, South Korea, home to 25 million, is well within artillery range of the North, which would most likely use conventional artillery munitions and chemical weapons. But according to Mattis, the Pentagon has a few tricks up its sleeve that wouldn't involve the decimation of Seoul.

WASHINGTON -- The top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee charged that President Trump's United Nations speech ripping the "embarrassment" Iran deal could have killed any chance for a peaceful solution with North Korea over its nuclear weapons program. "The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket Man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime," Trump declared in his first address to the world body in New York. Trump, who said Monday...

Donald Trump let loose on Twitter Sunday with a shoot-from-the-hip volley of posts referring to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un as "Rocket Man" - and picturing himself taking out Hillary Clinton with a golf ball. The US leader spoke Saturday night with South Korea's President Moon Jae-In, pledging joint "steps to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities and to maximize economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea," according to the White House. Mr Trump's own account of the conversation, which kicked off an unbridled salvo of early morning tweets, struck a less diplomatic tone. I spoke with President Moon of South...

There’s “no way to stop” Kim Jong Un’s regime and its missile and nuclear program, a North Korea expert told Fox News on Thursday, the warning coming amid Pyongyang's continued threats to sink Japan and blast the U.S. “into ashes and darkness.” Leading Seoul-based North Korea expert Andrei Lankov told Fox News that Kim Jong Un is accelerating his missile and nuclear program “much faster than anybody expected.” “They want to get the point of having a sufficient number of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of destroying a sufficient number of American cities,” Lankov said. The expert expressed doubt about reining...

The statements come as South Korea’s defence minister has called for the re-establishment of nuclear missiles as a response to Pyongyang’s nuclear tests. Speaking to CNN, Senator McCain said: “Washington needs to make sure that Kim Jong-Un knows that if he acts in an aggressive fashion, the price will be extinction. "The Korean defence minister just a few days ago called for nuclear weapons to be redeployed, it ought to be seriously considered....

U.S. Seeks U.N. Consent to Interdict North Korean Ships By DAVID E. SANGER SEPT. 6, 2017 WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Wednesday circulated a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would effectively empower the United States Navy and Air Force to interdict North Korean ships at sea, inspect them to determine whether they are carrying weapons material or fuel into the country, and use “all necessary measures” to enforce compliance. The language is included in a remarkably broad draft that would ban the shipment of all crude oil, refined petroleum and natural gas to North Korea,...

The nuclear confrontation between the US and North Korea entered a critical phase Sunday with North Korea’s conduct of an underground test of a thermonuclear bomb. If the previous round of this confrontation earlier this summer revolved around Pyongyang’s threat to attack the US territory of Guam, Sunday’s test, together with North Korea’s recent tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the continental US, was a direct threat to US cities. In other words, the current confrontation isn’t about US superpower status in Asia, and the credibility of US deterrence or the capabilities of US military forces in the...

North Korea May Fire Another ICBM This Weekend, South Warns by STELLA KIM and ALEXANDER SMITH SEOUL, South Korea — Less than one week after North Korea appeared to carry out its sixth nuclear test, South Korea warned Thursday that its neighbor may fire an intercontinental ballistic missile this weekend. South Korea's prime minister, Lee Nak-yon, suggested that Kim Jong Un, the North's leader, could order a launch on Saturday, the 64th anniversary of the totalitarian regime's founding. "There is speculation that there could be an additional provocation of firing an ICBM at a normal angle on [Sept.] 9," Lee...

If the U.S. pre-emptively attacks North Korea, Seoul, the capital of South Korea, and other places in Asia might get blasted in retaliation, but America will have knocked out North Korea's nuclear capability. Right? Wrong – at least in the opinion of a U.S. senior intelligence consultant who worked on a secret study of North Korea's nuclear program for the government and disagrees with widespread intelligence opinion, echoed by the press, that there are no viable options for dealing with North Korea's nuclear threat except negotiations. Dwight R. Rider, 30 years a targeting specialist for the U.S. with a master's...
  • North Korea Nuke Tests Further EMP Bomb

North Korea for the first time this week revealed plans for using its nuclear arms for space-based electronics-disrupting EMP attacks, in addition to direct warhead ground blasts. The official communist party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published a report Monday on "the EMP might of nuclear weapons," outlining an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack produced by detonating a nuclear warhead in space. "In general, the strong electromagnetic pulse generated from nuclear bomb explosions between 30 kilometers and 100 kilometers [18.6 miles and 62 miles] above the ground can severely impair electronic devices, electric machines, and electromagnetic grids, or destroy electric cables and safety...

It can be all too easy to see North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, as a nuclear-armed nuisance desperate for attention. But as is often the case with the belligerent young man, analysts say, there is a perverse logic to his carefully timed provocations aimed at China and the United States, including this week’s nuclear test – the country’s sixth, and by far its most powerful. In October, at the Chinese Communist Party’s once-every-five-years leadership conference, President Xi Jinping is likely to further consolidate his power. In the run-up, however, projecting an aura of stability is key. “North Korea knows that...

The presidents of China and Russia agreed late on Sunday to “appropriately deal with” North Korea’s sixth and most powerful nuclear test, Xinhua reported, with Beijing strongly condemning Pyongyang’s action. The agreement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Sunday night in Xiamen, Fujian province, ahead of Monday’s BRICS leaders summit. “The two leaders agreed to stick to the goal of denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and keep close communication and coordination to deal with the new situation,” Xinhua said in a brief report. US President Donald Trump responded to the test on Twitter,...

North Korea’s leader is “begging for war,” the U.S. ambassador said Monday at an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council, as members called for punishing the country with even stronger sanctions for its powerful nuclear test. Ambassador Nikki Haley said the U.S. would look at countries doing business with the North and planned to circulate a resolution this week with the goal of getting it approved Sept. 11. “Enough is enough. War is never something the United States wants. We don’t want it now. But our country’s patience is not unlimited,” Haley said. “The United States will look at...

South Korea says it has seen indications that the North is preparing more missile launches, possibly an intercontinental ballistic missile. It said it was strengthening its controversial US-made Thaad missile defence system after the North's test of a nuclear bomb at the weekend. The South has carried out live-fire exercises in response to the test. The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency meeting to discuss its response. It last imposed sanctions in August, targeting North Korean exports. Speaking before the meeting, the British ambassador to the UN, Matthew Rycroft, told reporters there were "further sectors of the...

The US envoy to the UN has urged the Security Council to take the "strongest possible measures" against North Korea after its latest nuclear test. "The time has come to exhaust all diplomatic means before it is too late," Nikki Haley told an emergency meeting of the council in New York. She also warned countries which did business with the North that they were aiding their nuclear ambitions. Reports suggest the North is preparing new test missile launches. Ms. Haley said North Korean leader Kim Jong-in had shown through his actions that he was "begging for war"....

Defense Secretary James Mattis on Sunday issued a stark warning to North Korea, saying the country would be met with a "massive military response" if it threatened the U.S. or its allies. "Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response," Mattis said in a statement outside of the White House after meeting with President Trump. North Korea openly threatens EMP attack for the first time, changing the game BY ANTHONY FUREY, POSTMEDIA NETWORK The news Sunday morning that North Korea had launched what appeared to be its sixth nuclear test and most powerful one to date is troubling enough. But a statement from the rogue regime took things to a whole new level. The North said it had tested an H-bomb that was “a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack according to strategic goals.” This is the first time it has...
