NFL players across the league knelt, locked arms and even refused to come out of the locker room during the national anthem Sunday. They were joined by coaches and even owners. It is believed to be in response to President Donald Trump's comments and tweets this week on protests during the anthem.
  • A modest proposal for NFL fans: Be a flash mob

It would be so satisfying if a group of patriotic fans to have at the ready a flash mob of singers at a stadium game. If the players "take a knee" to show their disdain for the flag and the national anthem, these talented souls would wait until just before the kick-off and then stand up and belt out the national anthem themselves. Chances are hundreds of those in attendance would join them. Then they would exit the stadium.

For my health, sanity and productivity, I quit watching the NFL regularly on television about the time Clint Longley single-handedly beat the Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving Day, 1974.  I tuned in periodically in the early '80s, but gave it up entirely by the end of the decade -- in part because I was then living abroad. When I returned to the States nearly a decade later, I found I no longer cared, and eventually even gave up on the Super Bowl. There was never the slightest chance I would go back, but even if I wanted to, I couldn't, as...

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fired back at President Trump on Saturday for encouraging league owners to remove players who take a knee during the national anthem, saying Trump’s “divisive comments” show “an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL.” “The NFL and our players are at our best when we help create a sense of unity in our country and our culture,” Goodell said in a statement. “There is no better example than the amazing response from our clubs and players to the terrible natural disasters we've experienced over the last month.” “Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack...

Friday night in Huntsville, Alabama, President Trump veered off from the political into sports and condemned the owners and athletes in the National Football League who either kneel or sit during the pre-game playing of our national anthem. While denouncing the president, let's be honest here: going to the White House for most of these black players only became a big deal when they could be pictured with the half-black president. Protesting such an honor only became taboo because of President Obama's skin color, and as President Trump is hated by most in the media and police shootings have become...

Donald Trump has renewed his attack on NFL stars kneeling during the national anthem, by urging fans to stop going to games "until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country". In tweets posted on Sunday morning, the US President told fans if they boycott matches "you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!" He added: "...NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN.
