The federal government began work Wednesday on replacing border wall in California, the first wall contract awarded in the Trump administration outside of eight prototypes that were built last year in San Diego. Customs and Border Protection is replacing a little more than 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in downtown Calexico, a sliver of the president's plan for a "big, beautiful wall" with Mexico. A barrier built in the 1990s from recycled metal scraps and landing mat will be torn down for bollard-style barriers that are 30 feet (9.1 meters) high, significantly taller than existing walls.

Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today. The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said. An unwilling father has been ordered to share custody of his two teenagers in a landmark ruling by a court in Spain. A judge ordered the man to equally share custody of his two children despite his unwillingness to do so after their mother said she could no longer cope. The court in Cordoba ruled that both parents should equally care for their 15-year-old boy, who suffers from a disability, and his 17-year-old sibling. Ledyard police said a 17-year-old high school student has been arrested and charged with threatening and breach of peace. According to a letter from the high school principal, that student made a comment stating “I could buy an AR-15”, the same gun used in the Florida shooting. The principal said the student wasn’t threatening to do harm, but rather was talking about buying guns. The principal said the student does not have access to guns at home.

A Mobile police officer has died after being shot Tuesday night. The officer has been identified as Justin Billa. The incident stemmed from an incident earlier Tuesday evening, when police found a woman named Fonda Poellnitz dead.
