Brown has worked as a rehearsal pianist for Dear Evan Hansen and King Kong. Sometimes things not mentioned are worth mentioning. We see post after post of political rantings and anti-Trump blather from entertainers, musicians, etc., that put a damper or flat-out ruin what we'd hoped would be a good time. I went to see The Who's "Moving On" concert yesterday and felt it was worth posting that there was not a SINGLE hint of anything political, anti-American, or anti-Trump anywhere throughout the event. We frequently repeat the mantra of "shut up and sing", and The Who did just that. This post isn't meant to be a review of the show itself. You can...

Sales of vinyl records have enjoyed constant growth in recent years. At the same time, CD sales are in a nosedive. Last year, the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) mid-year report suggested that CD sales were declining three times as fast as vinyl sales were growing. In February, the RIAA reported that vinyl sales accounted for more than a third of the revenue coming from physical releases. This trend continues in RIAA’s 2019 mid-year report, which came out on Thursday. Vinyl records earned $224.1 million (on 8.6 million units) in the first half of 2019, closing in on the...

At her concerts, Linda Ronstadt used to imagine that audience members were whispering to one another about what a terrible singer she was. She was an unusual rock star in several ways. Few others were as careful about keeping their distance from the insanity, and fewer turned away from arena adulation and the pop charts to do standards, operetta, and Mexican folk songs. Ronstadt was the most spectacular female singer of the rock era, her voice a thing of astonishing clarity and power and color. Due respect is here, in the documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. What...

Remarkably, Taylor Swift’s poke at the president on the MTV Video Music Awards show for his lack of support for LGBTQ rights legislation hasn’t yet resulted in a Trump twitterstorm. But Kellyanne Conway went on Fox News Tuesday night to defend the administration’s position against the Equality Act … and to give Swift a sick burn in return by attempting to render one of her songs toxic. “I actually like the new Taylor Swift song,” Conway told Fox’s Martha MacCallum. “It’s called ‘You Need to Calm Down.’ I can sing it for you.” Rather than do what any reasonable host...

At the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 26, Taylor Swift won the video of the year award for her latest song "You Need to Calm Down." It's a song that trashes anyone still dissenting from the LGBTQ agenda and begs them to "control your urges to scream about all the people you hate / 'Cause shade never made anybody less gay." The network news shows gushed over her leftist activism and the "Taylor Effect" they expect it to provide. ABC's George Stephanopoulos said, "she's doing it the way she does her music ... with intent and with intelligence." What...

Southern rock band Confederate Railroad is “rejecting” payment after being dropped from a Downstate fair by a governor who blasted the band’s logo as a symbol “of racists, of white nationalists, of the alt-right.” The band was to play the Du Quoin State Fair before Gov. J. B. Pritzker put the kibosh on their performance. Capitol Fax first questioned the Pritzker administration about the band’s appearance. “On June 24th, the Du Quoin State Fair agreed to pay us in full. [We] agreed we should give it to a charitable organization that benefits Southern Illinois. On July 19, 2019, we received...

The on-air numbers weren't down quite as sharply as in recent years, and MTV is touting big increases in social and online engagement. The Video Music Awards fell in the ratings again — but not as steeply as they had in the past couple of years or in comparison to some other recent awards shows. Monday's kudocast on MTV drew 1.93 million viewers and a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49. That's an all-time low for the flagship channel, down from the previous low — set last year — of 2.25 million viewers and a 1.1 in the demo. The VMAs...

After nearly 50 years, men who wrote contemporary music for Mass have their final concert togetherST. LOUIS (ChurchMilitant.com) - The men responsible for some of the most popular songs sung at Mass are having their final concert in September. Back in the 1970s, five men in formation with the Jesuits in St. Louis, Missouri, began writing songs that they would then sing during Mass — typically with accompaniment on the guitar. The songs that they wrote were simple, folksy and thoroughly modern. They became known as the St. Louis Jesuits. Each man worked independently, but they often helped each other...

It takes a fearless DJ to stand up for “late-night vibes” when you’ve got Bill Clinton asking you to turn the music down. But that’s what happened in the Hamptons when Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jon Bon Jovi and former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine dined at chic East Hampton hotel the Maidstone late Friday. A witness said, “Bill asked the staff to turn down the music as the late-night music scene was just beginning because there were still people having dinner [and their table was deep in political discussion]. They were told ‘no’ by the DJ. The wait staff...

SABATON bassist Pär Sundström recently spoke with France's United Rock Nations. The full conversation can be streamed below. A few excerpts follow... On SABATON's lyrics: Pär: "War is not really black-and-white. War always has a very gray color, because war is conceived by different sides for whatever [reasons] they have. In all conflicts, there are a lot of losers and a lot of people who have their different inputs and think that, 'We are the good guys. They are the bad.' For SABATON, it's not about taking a stand. We write the songs from different kinds of angles all the...
