Keyboardist and composer Bernie Worrell, who helped shape the sound of the band Parliament-Funkadelic and influenced countless artists across a wide range of genres, died Friday at 72. Worrell announced earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer. His musical life began early — according to his official biography, he started studying piano at age 3, wrote his first concerto at age 8 and performed with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., at 10. The classically trained keyboardist (he studied at Juilliard and the New England Conservatory of Music) made his name — and an...

In the movie “High Fidelity,” John Cusack’s character owns a record store in Chicago. In one scene he turns off a mix tape made by one of his employees because it’s too loud and in your face. When the employee says he should go back and play Cusack’s “old sad bastard music,” Cusack replies, “I don’t wanna hear old sad bastard music, Barry, I just want something I can ignore.”That’s really what most of the music in our lives is – something you don’t realize is there, but you’d miss it if it were gone. And if some music publishers...

The Dixie Chicks are at it again. Thirteen years after a public comment against then-president George. W. Bush lead to a backlash from country fans and nearly destroyed their career, the superstar trio are again getting political. Their target this time? The Dixie Chicks have never been known for their conservative views. In fact, they used to be some of the most outspoken liberal voices in country music. DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - There is a growing movement with Christianity calling for greater acceptance of homosexuality. It is voicing itself differently depending on whether its of a Protestant or Catholic stripe, but it is increasing. Although diverging, for the time being, over the question of any sexual activity being immoral, both Protestant and Catholics who identify as gay are doing what they can to move the needle to a greater acceptance of homosexuality in general among followers and adherents. Within the Protestant world, a number of big name musicians continue a parade of announcing they are gay. The most recent...
