Thousands of people have signed up for a New Year’s Day protest in Philadelphia. With the yearly Mummers parade canceled, some 2,600 people plan to go to the Mummers protest march. “Mayor Jim Kenney has tried for years (like every Philly Mayor in the past) to cancel the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, a tradition preceding the birth of our nation. What he can NOT do is cancel our First Amendment right to peacefully protest his erroneous taxes and restrictions on our freedoms and liberties. It should go without saying that everyone will be on 2nd Street New Years Day, strutting their...

A Mummers group honoring Flyers mascot Gritty was kicked out of the annual New Year’s Day parade in Philadelphia on Wednesday after one of its members used blackface. Froggy Carr, a wench brigade that dressed in orange-and-black colored costumes in what was apparently a motif honoring Gritty, got booted from the parade competition for best outfit design, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The outlet caught up with mummer Kevin Hinkel, who was the lone individual confirmed to have used blackface, per NBC10.

On Tuesday, as the Mummers Parade festivities were moving from your television screen to drunken celebrations down on Two Street, a scandal began unfolding involving a local Mummers troupe and its purported use of blackface. Except — says the performer being accused — there was no blackface. The skit in question came to us courtesy of Finnegan New Years Brigade Comic Club, which previously ran afoul of public opinion with a 2016 routine making fun of Caitlyn Jenner.

Philadelphia's incoming mayor and organizers of the city's annual New Year's Day parade condemned expressions of hate, a day after some Mummers Parade participants mocked Caitlyn Jenner, were accused of harassing gays and painted their faces brown to portray Mexicans. Officials with the 116-year-old Mummers Parade pledged Saturday to cooperate with authorities looking into any complaints. They said in a statement that they will continue discussions on sensitivity, on what is considered satire and what is "over the line." They also said a member of one of the Friday parade's performance groups, the Finnegan NYB, has been banned from the...

AS A KID growing up on 2nd Street in South Philly, Ian Morrison enjoyed the spectacle of the wild post-New Year's Day Parade celebrations that unfurled in his tight-knit neighborhood. But what he looked forward to the most was the day after the parade. "We'd steal everything the brigades threw out, the makeup and the costumes," laughed Morrison, 39, dressed from head to toe yesterday as his makeup-heavy drag-queen alter ego, Brittany Lynn. Morrison, City Councilmen Jim Kenney and Mark Squilla, and several members of the LGBT "Miss Fancy" Brigade gathered at the Mummers Museum, at 2nd Street and Washington...

The Annual Mummers Parade will once again run along Broad Street in the city of brotherly love Philadelphia. The Mummers Parade is held each New Year’s Day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Local clubs (usually called “New Years Associations”) compete in one of four categories (Comics, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades). They prepare elaborate costumes and moveable scenery, which take months to complete. This is done in clubhouses, many of which are located on or near 2nd Street (called “Two Street” by some local residents)[1] in the Pennsport neighborhood of South Philadelphia, which also serve as social gathering places for members....

Mummers divisions want to return parade to Broad StreetAssociated Press All four divisions of the Mummers Parade said they want to return to Broad Street for next year's parade, and a city official said he expects Mayor Street to go along. "The mayor is inclined to do this. I don't see a problem," city Managing Director Phil Goldsmith said after meeting with Mummers leaders. Dwindling crowds along South Broad Street led to a switch to Market Street for the annual New Year's Day event in 2000. But crowds didn't pack the route and the parade continued to be plagued by...
