Ohio Gov. John Kasich collected another endorsement from a prominent Southern Republican on Tuesday. Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott pledged his support to the governor, and will serve as a national co-chair on Kasich's campaign. Lott, 73, spent 35 years in Congress from Mississippi's delegation, and rose through the ranks of GOP leadership in the Senate to secure the top spot. His colleagues ousted him from that position after he made comments praising former South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond, who ran as a "Dixiecrat" for president in 1948. Thurmond's states' rights platform challenged the civil rights movement of the...

The Brandon High School Band did not perform at halftime during the season-opening game Friday night. A statement from the Rankin County School District says a July federal court order is the reason the band was banned from Friday night's halftime show. The band had been slated to perform the hymn "How Great Thou Art." The district made the decision to ban the halftime show after learning the hymn was included in the performance. "It bothers me because you look at the schools and all of the school shootings and all the bad things that are happening, and wonder why....

...But Fans in Stands Have an Answer for That Ruling A Mississippi school district had just been through some serious gavel pounding from a federal judge — including a $7,500 fine — and didn’t want any more problems. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves gave Rankin County School District the word on July 10, saying it promoted Christianity during school hours after it agreed to stop. So Reeves fined the district $7,500 and again ordered it to stop sponsoring prayers at graduations, assemblies, athletic competitions and other school events, WLBT-TV reported. “That means administrators, teachers and staff of the Rankin County...

High court in Mississippi says state trooper who issued 25 bogus tickets should never have been reinstated with full back pay. A Mississippi Highway Patrol officer who issued bogus traffic citations to meet his ticket quota was fired on Friday by the state supreme court. All nine justices agreed that the department was right to terminate Sammy William Ray and that the state Court of Appeals was wrong to intervene to give him his job back, with full back pay. Ray was a six-year veteran trooper in 2009 when a routine audit revealed that he had been responsible for an...

Sen. Ted Cruz was overshadowed during much of the first GOP debate, but he finished strong. And this might turn out to be a microcosm of his larger campaign plan. True, Donald Trump is sucking up everyone’s oxygen. And, yes, logic would dictate that — because he occupies the same populist space as Cruz — Trump would take a disproportionate number of votes from the Texas conservative. But, instead, Cruz is polling well — in third place, behind Trump and Ben Carson, according to a new Fox News poll. And if Trump gets out of the race (for now, that’s...

As Ted Cruz traipses through the South, his mentions of one Republican draw more derision than that of any Democrat, President Obama and presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton included. Jeb Bush. During campaign stops Monday and Tuesday in Tennessee and Mississippi, Cruz's references to the former Florida governor, now a staple of the senator's stump speech, often elicited loud booing, sometimes accompanied by scattered shouts of "Establishment!" or "RINO!" (Republican In Name Only). For months, the Republican Texas senator has been alluding to Bush as the archetypal moderate, insufficiently conservative and guaranteed to shut the GOP out of the White House...

A federal magistrate judge has ordered a young man and woman from Mississippi to be held without bail, pending grand jury action on charges they attempted to join the Islamic State. U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Allan Alexander made the ruling Tuesday in Oxford. Alexander said that although 20-year-old Jaelyn Delshaun Young and 22-year-old Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla have never been in trouble with the law and have family members willing to oversee their home confinement, she still feared that both would attempt to commit acts of terrorism. Federal prosecutors had pushed Alexander to deny bail for both, citing statements made to...

Former Mississippi Senate candidate Chris McDaniel (R) on Tuesday accused Republican leaders of enforcing a double standard in their response to the revelation that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) spoke to a white supremacist group in 2002. ADVERTISEMENTMcDaniel nearly took out Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) in the this year's GOP Senate primary. He was the target of attacks from the National Republican Senatorial Committee and some in the state GOP who said he should withdraw from the race because he had booked a speaking engagement at a conservative rally alongside a white nationalist. McDaniel ultimately withdrew from the rally....

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a potential 2016 presidential contender, declined to support tea party critics of Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran's efforts to mobilize non-GOP voters to win the Republican nomination."I'm for more people voting, not less people voting," Paul told reporters Wednesday.Paul, an original tea party icon for his 2010 GOP primary win over the establishment, has worked assiduously the past year on broadening his party's appeal to minority voters, including negotiating with Democrats on efforts to rewrite the Voting Rights Act.Cochran's vote total grew by almost 40,000 votes from the initial June 3 primary to Tuesday's runoff against state...
