Now this… Ferguson Mayor James Knowles told FOX 2 anchors late on Monday night that he had repeatedly requested the National Guard Monday night… But his requests were ignored. “I know I’ve been on the phone in contact with the County Executive’s Office. I know he has requested. I am requesting. I’ve requested the National Guard troops to come out from their command post to help restore order along the business district. We have not seen that… Those calls have gone unheeded at this point… We need to have the governor step up and give us the resources that he’s...

Angry crowds took to the streets around the Ferguson, Missouri, police department after the grand jury determined there was no probable cause to charge officer Darren Wilson with any crime for the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The incident highlighted longstanding racial tensions in the predominantly black city, which has a white-dominated power structure. "They...

STATE SEN. MARIA CHAPPELLE-NADAL: And I have to tell you, this is St. Louis's race war. We didn't have a race war like other cities throughout the country. This is our race war. And people have to be open, and they have to be honest and they have to earnest, and they have not been earnest for decades. In my own experience, I know people in my own party, in my own government structure who disregard things that we say and how we feel, and we are not going to allow it anymore.

If rioters demeaned the cause of nonviolence, that was not in most cases their intent. The majority of plunderers and burners in American cities last week were about as ideologically motivated as soldier ants. Many, to be sure, were venting the longstanding resentments of black Americans in a white society. But the looters were predominantly driven by a combination of self-help and help-yourself..."His death just gave us an excuse," said Ronald Rudolph, 22, in Pittsburgh. "I never did dig the man much when he was alive." When a well-provisioned Harlem "liberator" was asked why he was stealing, he cried: "It's...
