When Deanna Sporleder's 17 year-old son announced he was spending the night at his 16 year-old girlfriend's house, her home life turned upside down, and part of it was subsidized by federal grants to the local school.Deanna and her husband were against their son leaving home and moving in with his teen girlfriend, but the girl's parents consented and the local law enforcement, both county and city, told Deanna that at seventeen, her son could move out and they had no power to stop him. A few months later, she while signing her other children up for school, she asked...

Universities are still trying to make a teachable moment out of the tragedy which occurred in Ferguson, Missouri last summer but considerably less so of the death of sidewalk vendor Eric Garner at the hands of the NYPD that also occurred last year. “Catholic University law professor Clifford Fishman is using the cases to teach the pros and cons of grand juries,” Lisa Grace Lednicer reported in The Washington Post magazine on February 22, 2015.” Last semester, he argued in class that the grand jury perhaps was right to not indict the officer who killed [Michael] Brown, but wrong to...

Starbucks executive Corey duBrowa recently deleted his twitter account, after what he said were abusive comments as a result of his push for a campaign in which his baristas were to engage with customers about race relations. "I was personally attacked through my Twitter account around midnight last night and the tweets represented a distraction from the respectful conversation we are trying to start around Race Together," duBrowa said. "I’ll be back on Twitter soon." But the whole point of the conversations he promoted, was to get people talking about what is uncomfortable, and controversial. It seems childish to delete...

ST. LOUIS • The Missouri History Museum canceled a speakers panel set for Thursday evening that intended, in part, to compare “state violence” in Ferguson and Palestine. Sourik Beltran, an anthropology student at Washington University and president of the student group AltaVoz, proposed the event early in February. He originally called it “From Ayotzinapa to Ferguson: A Dialogue on Solidarity and Inter-Movement Collaboration.” He said the goals were to connect activists, foster collaboration among social justice groups and “draw parallels between state violence here and in Mexico.” A week or two later, Beltran added a third comparison. The panel would...

“The undeniable logic of the movement is to establish the supremacy of the Black community over the police that patrol the community – period.” The New York Times and other megaphones for white supremacy have proclaimed that the Black Lives Matter movement suffered a “setback” with the shooting of two cops, last week, during a demonstration in Ferguson, Missouri. To buttress its March 12 headline [3], “Just as Ferguson Was Making Progress, Shooting Deals a Setback,” the Times quoted Kim Tihen, a white city councilwoman and former Ferguson police officer who is “outraged by the behavior and lawlessness of the...

Missouri cop killer Cecil Clayton was executed Tuesday night after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected arguments he should be spared because he was missing a piece of his brain. Clayton, who at 74 was the state's oldest death-row prisoner, was pronounced dead at 9:21 pm CT, eight minutes after his lethal injection was administered, prison officials said in a statement. "They brought me up here to execute me," he said in his final statement. Clayton was convicted of murdering sheriff's deputy Chris Castetter after a domestic disturbance in 1996. His case drew extra attention because of his brain injury, the...

UPLANDS PARK, Missouri — A local government employee for the village of Uplands Park has been fired amid comments he made in a TV interview blaming police for the shooting of two officers in Ferguson. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the town's Board of Trustees met Tuesday night in a closed session to discuss the status of clerk John Muhammad. Village attorney Richard Magee said afterward that Muhammad was fired for misrepresenting his job....

FERGUSON, Mo. — Peering outside the office window of his tire shop, John Zisser grumbles about the pile of burnt rubble that lies on the opposite corner of a busy intersection. “If you come here to my shop and you see that,” he says, as gestures out the window, “is that going to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling like you want to come back here to do business?” “Short answer: no, no it’s not,” he says. Zisser, 55, has owned and operated Zisser’s Tires in this city since 1987. He says the still-visible damage from the November protests that...

Missouri’s lieutenant governor lashed out at the Justice Department on Monday, accusing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the Obama administration of racism in the wake of the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, in Ferguson last year. “There is more racism in the Justice Department than there is in anywhere I see in the St. Louis area,” Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said in an interview with NewsMaxTV Monday. “We are making progress. We’ve come an enormous way in 50 years. That’s not to say we don’t have still have more to do. But it is...

The most recent news from Ferguson concerns what Eric Holder has rightly called the “ambush shooting” of two police officers outside the city’s police department. This incident occurred in the wake of two detailed reports released by the Department of Justice. The first report deals in depth with the shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. The report recommended that the case against him be closed. The second DOJ report contained a scathing indictment of the sad state of affairs within the entire criminal justice system of Ferguson. The combined effect of these two reports is likely...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)FERGUSON, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — A man charged in the shooting of two police officers during a demonstration in Ferguson told investigators he was not targeting law enforcement and had been aiming for someone with whom he was in dispute. St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch said he believed the 20-year-old suspect attended last week’s protest before the shooting happened. Activists said Jeffrey Williams was not a consistent fixture in their tight-knit group. “We’re not sure we completely buy that part of it,” McCulloch said of Williams’ contention that he did not fire at the officers....

Shortly before shots rang out at Wednesday night’s protest outside the Ferguson Police Department, injuring two officers and reviving fears of return to last year’s social unrest, the Twitter account of Operation Ferguson posted an ominous warning: “This will not end well tonight.” Whoever composed the Tweet was right. Exactly how they knew is an open question. The Operation Ferguson Twitter account has 70,000 followers. It is run by Anonymous, the mysterious band of online vigilantes and mask-wearing anarchists that allies itself periodically with far-left causes from the Occupy movement to Julian Assange’s Wikileaks. To read the stream of anti-police...

Some Muslim students at the University of Missouri protested an upcoming campus screening of “American Sniper” and clamored to have the film’s debut there canceled. At the heart of the controversy is a Muslim student activist who declared showing the film on campus would make her feel “unsafe” and demanded an “apology and explanation” as to how and why the movie was even selected for Mizzou audiences. The uproar was taken quite seriously, and prompted the student government to conduct a meeting to determine whether the flick should be shown. “This film is blatant racist, colonialist propaganda that should not...

"D’oh – The Uplands Park “City Manager” Isn’t Actually a “City Manager”, and The Real Uplands Park Officials Are A little Upset…." A fellow named John Muhammad identified himself as city manager of the tiny north county village of Uplands Park during a live interview Thursday night on FOX News channel. Mr. Muhammad then went on a bizarre diatribe to say he, and his community, believed the KKK or the police themselves were the shooters. Beyond the jaw dropping protestations about the police shooting another slight problem is Mr. Muhammad is not a “city manager”. Actually, not even close. First,...

Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s News HQ,” Lt. Governor Peter Kinder (R-MO) said Attorney General Eric Holder “on many occasions” seemed to “be inciting the mob.” Kinder said, “He is sounding the right notes today, this afternoon. I just wish he had been more judicious and measured in his comments since the August 9. Because Mr. Holder came in and seemed on many occasions to be inciting the mob. He seemed to be putting his weight on the one side of the scales of justice and not backing up law enforcement. And if he is now, you know, backing...

There is no defense for the shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri ("2 Ferguson police officers shot in protest outside station," March 13 news story). It was a cowardly act and the perpetrators should be punished to the full extent of the law. However, even more problematic to me is that the event wasn’t shocking. With our culture of gun violence and regular shootings of young black males, only someone who has no understanding of America could be genuinely shocked. Blacks have come far — we can celebrate a black president and attorney general — but racism is...
