Mass shootings in major metropolitan areas in the United States disproportionately affect Black people, and structural racism may play a role, according to a study published on Wednesday in the journal JAMA Surgery. Researchers at Tulane University analyzed data relating to the 51 largest metropolitan areas, including demographic and income data as well as reports of mass shootings from 2015 to 2019 compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit organization that tracks gun violence in the US. CNN and the Gun Violence Archive define a mass shooting as a shooting that injured or killed four or more people, not...

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police say both the man whose fatal shooting sparked violent protests in the city and the police officer who shot him are black. Chief Edward Flynn made the disclosure at a news conference Sunday. Flynn identified the man killed Saturday as 23-year-old Sylville K. Smith, and says Smith had a “lengthy arrest record.” Mayor Tom Barrett says a still image pulled from the officer’s body camera shows “without question” that Smith had a gun in his hand when he was shot.

Feb. 23, 2006 - Four months ago, Bode Miller sat across from me in the bar of a New York City hotel and shared his idea of what a perfect two weeks in Torino would look like. “For me,” he said, “the ideal Olympics would be to go in with all that pressure, all that attention and have performances that are literally tear-jerking, that make people put their heads down because they’re embarrassed at how emotional they’re getting, that make people want to try sports, talk to their kids, call their f---ing ex-wives—and come away with no medals. I think...

With a raucous Republican crowd urging him on, Sen. Zell Miller unleashed a white-hot attack on fellow Democrat Sen. John Kerry last night — charging that the Massachusetts pol's anti-terror policies add up to a "bowl of mush." As the first member of an opposing party to deliver the keynote address at a national convention, Miller used his prime-time slot to slam Kerry with some of the most vitriolic language heard during the GOP gathering. After listing a slew of defense programs that Kerry voted against during his Senate career, Miller asked, "This is the man who wants to be...

A graphic US military video showing the killing of three Iraqi people is being circulated via the web after appearing on US TV news channel ABC News. The one-minute file, filmed from a US Apache helicopter, shows three apparently unarmed people being shot with 30mm cannon fire. The clip was cut from a longer video obtained by ABC News last week and verified by a senior US army official. The MPEG format file has been posted to several right-wing US forums, where the main concern seems to be to celebrate the effectiveness of the Apache's firepower. So far though, in...
