President Trump is expected to extend the deployment of thousands of U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border into January rather than withdrawing the personnel in the middle of December, Pentagon officials tell NPR. The move would further extend the rare deployment of active-duty troops at the Mexico border, rather than just National Guard personnel. The deployment orders for active-duty troops had been scheduled to end on Dec. 15. But defense officials tell NPR that the much of the active-duty troop deployment is expected to be extended into January and that part of the force may also be switched out for...

ROME - Fully automated and autonomous lethal weapons systems must be banned now before they become a reality in tomorrow’s wars, a Vatican representative said. The development of robotic weapons or “killer robots” will provide “the capacity of altering irreversibly the nature of warfare, becoming more detached from human agency, putting in question the humanity of our societies,” Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic told a group of experts at the United Nations in Geneva. The archbishop, who is the Vatican observer to U.N. agencies in Geneva, spoke Nov. 22 at a meeting of the high contracting parties to the Convention on Prohibitions...

Three American service members were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan on Tuesday, marking the deadliest day for U.S. forces in the embattled country this year. Three American troops were killed and three others were wounded in the attack in the notorious Taliban hotbed – Ghazini city – after their armored vehicle drove over a massive bomb buried under the road. An American contractor was also wounded in the attack. Including Tuesday’s attack, 12 Americans have been killed in combat in Afghanistan this year. Five Americans have been killed this month alone.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday asked the Supreme Court to bypass the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' and decide on whether or not the Trump administration's ban on transgenders in the military is constitutional, NPR reported. From the court petition: In 2018, Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced a new policy concerning military service by transgender individuals. Under the Mattis policy, transgender individuals with a history of a medical condition called gender dysphoria would be disqualified from military service unless they meet certain conditions. There should be very little legal controversy in the military's employment to defend the border against an unlawful incursion by foreign nationals. The defense of territory and persons is the primary responsibility of the Department of Defense. Other authorities also relevant specifically, the provisions under federal law as vested under Title 10, Chapter 13 of the U.S. code: That whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he...

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION During my second month of night school, our professor gave a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Obviously this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question...

US President Donald Trump's administration has appealed to the United States Supreme Court to consider proposed restrictions to transgender military members. The restrictions, which have been blocked by lower courts, were first announced by the President in July 2017 on his Twitter account before being officially recognised by Secretary of Defence James Mattis. "The United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would...

The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court to take up the president's transgender military ban. Solicitor General Noel Francisco filed a petition to Supreme Court justices Friday asking them to hear the issue currently being debated in three lower courts in order to have the case decided quicker, according to CNN. Francisco also argued that the injunctions issued by lower courts warrant review for harming the military. Trump first announced on Twitter his intention to ban transgender people from serving in the military in July 2017. In March of this year he signed a memo written by Defense...

President Trump confirmed Thursday that troops he sent to the southern border had authorization to use lethal force to stop migrants from entering the country. “If they have to, they’re going to use lethal force. I’ve — I’ve given the OK. If they have to. I hope they don’t have to,” he said, adding that he was open to the possibility of closing the entire border if necessary. White House chief of staff John Kelly signed a Cabinet order Wednesday allowing some troops to engage in law enforcement activities and use lethal force, loosening the engagement restrictions on military personnel...

OTTAWA - The Canadian air force is increasingly running short of combat-capable fighter jets and pilots and government attempts to address the problem have only made it worse, the nation’s top watchdog said on Tuesday. The report is another blow to a decade-long, trouble-plagued attempt by successive administrations to replace Canada’s CF-18 jets, some of which have been flying for almost 40 years. “National Defence (defense ministry) has not done enough to manage risks related to Canada’s fighter aircraft fleet ... until a replacement fleet is in place.” Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said in a statement that Ottawa would launch...

The White House is likely to grant U.S. troops on the border with Mexico additional authority to protect customs and border personnel if needed, a U.S. official said on Monday. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a public announcement could come around Tuesday and specific details were still being worked on. Currently troops do not have the authority to protect border officials. There are about 5,900 active-duty troops on the border. Reinforcements were sent by U.S. President Trump with the goal of helping bolster the border ahead of the expected arrival Central American migrants. IDHS did not...
