  • Commentary: America's military and Donald Trump

Memorial Day, as veterans are quick to point out, is a day to remember America's fallen warriors—not the former ones. (That's Veteran's Day). But it turns out America's military has quite a bit to celebrate this year—in large part thanks to President Trump. When Donald Trump first took office, "Americans really didn't know if this guy was going to get us into a war," says Real Clear Politics pollster Sean Trende. "There was real worry about how risky it was to elect him president." Among military hawks, the concern was Trump's "America First" rhetoric leading to U.S. withdrawal from the...

The FReeper Canteen Observes ------------------------Memorial Day 2018 ------------------------     HistoryMemorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet (see below) carried the dedication "To...
  • What do coins on military tombstones mean?

Have you ever been in a cemetery and saw coins laying on a tombstone? Col. Dave Taylor, a Vietnam War veteran, explained the tradition and the reason behind it. A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respects. If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed.

There is no question that the left aims at changing America in the worst possible way but their efforts would go largely unnoticed if it not for a sympathetic and like-minded media The United States of America is by far the most powerful nation on planet earth spending about as much on defense as the entire rest of the world. According to a report on globalization from Credit Suisse, the US has maintained its position as the world’s strongest military. As an example, although Russia has the most substantial number of tanks approx. 15,000 with the US coming in at...

Tonight as my birthday was headed toward its end, I did something I've done once a year for a few decades. I found an American in uniform and offered him/her a monetary thank-you for keeping me and my family safe. It's my annual birthday present to myself. I've always kept this gesture to myself, but tonight's experience was unusual so I thought I'd share it. I walked into a 7-11 near Ft. Belvoir, figuring I'd find someone in uniform. I brought a $100 bill. The goal was to encourage one servicemember to have a nice dinner on me.

French President Emmanuel Macron this year reintroduced national service, also known as conscription, to France in order to “foster patriotism and heal social divisions.”At a time when our nation is the most hyperpolarized it has ever been, when our young generation increasingly questions the very worth of America itself, and our country, particularly new generations is at the worst health in history, it is time to consider whether we should implement national service ourselves. National service is in common use currently across democratic nations in the world as a form of civic duty amidst the freedom one is provided, just...

The U.S. military continues its “maximum pressure campaign” in regard to North Korea, and U.S. forces on the Korean Peninsula are “ready to fight tonight,” the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson said today. Dana W. White confirmed Defense Secretary James N. Mattis spoke with President Donald J. Trump today, ahead of Trump announcing that he has terminated the planned June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. U.S. forces on the peninsula maintain their usual high state of vigilance, White and the director of the Joint Staff, Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., told reporters in...

As on every Memorial Day, small flags will be placed next to neat, respectful rows of headstones at military cemeteries across America. Neat and respectful is not how you would describe Mare Island Naval Cemetery – a forsaken plot of hallowed ground that fell between the cracks of Pentagon base closings and the city of Vallejo’s bankruptcy. The oldest military cemetery on the West Coast is in utter disrepair. It is the final resting place for 800-plus veterans, including a few who fought in the War of 1812 and three Medal of Honor recipients. The daughter of Francis Scott Key,...

SEOUL, South Korea—In a striking challenge to his fellow conservatives ahead of nuclear talks between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, a top aide to former South Korean President Lee Myung Bak told me that South Koreans will “have to live with” a reduction in American forces in Korea “if that’s necessary and there’s no other way to denuclearize North Korea.” “If we can make a deal with the U.S. on the basis of partial withdrawal—a drawdown of U.S. troops—that’s something I think we should discuss seriously,” said Chun Yung Woo, who served as national-security adviser to Lee—a conservative hardliner...

  • Cruel whether housed with military or not ("Undocumented immigrant" children)

The question isn’t whether immigrant minors can be humanely held at military bases. It is whether it is humane to inflict circumstances that cause them to be housed there — or anywhere else — at all. It is not. What are these circumstances? They will be detained after being forcibly separated from their parents, who will have been arrested on criminal charges for crossing the border — adding to the trauma from what was already a harrowing trek to come here. This is being done to deter Central Americans from coming because their own countries are unable to protect them...

LET GO AND LET GOD As children bring their broken toys with tears for us to mend... I brought my broken dreams to God because he was my friend. But instead of leaving him in peace to work alone... I hung around and tried to help with ways that were my own. At last I snatched them and cried, "How could you be so slow?" "My child," He said, "What could I do? You never did let go."
