Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s iconic 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, were the first to field the new M17 pistol this week. The era of the Beretta-made M9 for Army leaders is over with the introduction of Sig Sauer’s new Modular Handgun System. A select group of soldiers tested M17s on Monday. Roughly 2,000 pistols were inventoried and inspected prior to the demonstration.

SIERRA VISTA — For more than 20 years a group of women — most of them members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sierra Vista — have been making lap covers for hospitalized veterans. On Dec. 4, about 20 members of the group — The Crafty Ladies of Immanuel — will travel to the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (hospital) in Tucson to present veterans with 175 lap covers. Some are knitted, some crocheted and others are machine sewn. The women also make body covers, sewn in patriotic colors and used to cover veterans who have died while hospitalized. “If...

Two defense contractors accused of leaking classified information this year The Defense Department's efforts to restrict access to its most sensitive databases remain inadequate more than four years after the high-profile leaks by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, according to the Pentagon's inspector general. In a report released Friday, the federal watchdog listed the issue as a top management challenge confronting the military, alongside the threat of North Korea, Russia, Iran, and transnational terrorism, among others. The Pentagon has been particularly troubled by the ability of employees or government contractors to steal and disseminate troves of classified information,...

The Supremes haven’t begun releasing new decisions yet, but they’re still managing to make news. In this case, it’s not so much what they did as what they opted not to do. A court case out of Nebraska was challenging a law regarding restrictions on protests which interrupt funerals. It takes little imagination to guess that this was aimed directly at Westboro Baptist Church. The church had challenged the law on constitutional grounds but lost their bid in the lower courts. Rather than taking up the task yet again, the Supreme Court declined to hear it and allowed the lower...

A FEW GOOD WORDS The accuracy of lie detector tests has never been completely decided upon. Although it is inadmissible as evidence in court, even the proponents of lie detector testing agree that it is not always accurate. Among the first lie detectors, considered by some to be the most accurate, was the donkey's tail! That's right, in ancient India, a suspect would be escorted to a darkened room. Only three would be present: the accused, the interrogator, and a donkey. The person being questioned was told that the donkey would bray if his responses were...

SOUTH KOREA — Thousands of miles away from home, U.S. troops in South Korea marked the annual holiday of Thanksgiving on Thursday. A traditional meal including turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing was served to soldiers at Camp Humphreys, which is just 60 miles from the border with North Korea. The U.S. soldiers said the Thanksgiving meal reminded them of home. “This Thanksgiving meal today prepared for us is absolutely amazing. They’ve really outdone themselves. I do have family back out AT home. I have a wife and two beautiful daughters. I miss them very much but I’m here now and...

In the Army, where I have the privilege of serving, there’s an unspoken rule that no service member celebrates Thanksgiving alone. If word gets out that a soldier doesn’t have a place to go for the holiday, other soldiers will invite him or her to share a meal and celebrate. Our creed to never leave a fallen comrade isn’t just meant for times of war; it’s a way of life. All soldiers are reminded that they are members of a tight-knit community – a bond that’s becoming increasingly rare in today’s society. While it’s nearly impossible to duplicate the closeness...

A sound detected in the hunt for a missing submarine is "consistent with a non-nuclear explosion", Argentina has said. The ARA San Juan has been missing in the South Atlantic since the middle of November and dozens of planes and boats have been involved in search. Some 44 people are on board and the operation has entered a "critical phase" because the crew's oxygen supply could be running low. Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said relatives of the crew members have been told about the development and the search will continue until the fate of the crew is known. He described...

A federal judge in Maryland issued a second order on Tuesday blocking President Trump from implementing his ban on transgender military service. The preliminary injunction was granted to a group of active-duty transgender troops who sued Trump and top military officials in August. For now, it bars the Pentagon and Coast Guard from implementing or enforcing Trump’s August guidance aimed at rolling back the Obama administration’s policy of allowing open service and medical care for transgender troops.

The service members, who worked as part of the White House Communications Agency (WHCA), are being investigated for allegedly breaking curfew in Vietnam, The Washington Post reported Tuesday... In August, four Army soldiers working with the WHCA were reassigned after bringing women back to their hotel room on a trip to Panama with Vice President Mike Pence.
