It astonishes us how quickly Afghanistan is moving from being a "war of necessity" to "too tough to do." President Obama's comments over the weekend gave the clearest signal yet that his administration is seeking an exit strategy from a conflict he described in August as "not only a war worth fighting" but "fundamental to the defense of our people." Commitment to that fundamental defense is eroding.

In a little noticed development last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered 2,500 to 3,000 more troops to Afghanistan as soon as possible to meet imminent threats from roadside bombs. Gates was responding to a request from the overall U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for more bomb disposal and route clearance teams, medical rescue units and intelligence specialists. All are needed to combat the rising use of roadside bombs, the No. 1 troop killer in Afghanistan. Which troops are getting those assignments remained unclear Monday. I guess we can all go home now. The lawyers for the parents of Rifqa Bary assured the court today that there is no such thing as honor killing in Islam. The attorneys who are employees of CAIR said that Rifqa's concerns were unfounded. And if CAIR says so it must be true. What they ignored is the major question, why are employees of an organization named by the DOJ as a sponsor of terrorism allowed to operate as lawyers in the United States. It seems to me that they should be in court as defendants, not attorneys.
