Mexico is the living example of what befalls a nation when it allows corruption to run rampant and fails to crack down on crime. The effect cartel violence has on the lives of Mexicans is now common knowledge — for many in the Latin American nation, there is always a lingering fear, a walking on eggshells to avoid running afoul of deadly organized crime. The average Mexican citizen understands that, should he rub the local narcos the wrong way and incur their displeasure, he can expect little-to-no help from the authorities and can do just as little to defend himself...

TENANTLA, Mexico – Whoever wins Sunday's presidential election will have to face not only Mexico's drug cartels, but a new kind of crime involving whole neighborhoods defying police and military personnel. It was on display in the Jalisco state town of Ciudad Guzman — a stronghold of the Jalisco New Generation cartel — in early June, when a crowd of men and women gathered around two pickups carrying armed Mexican marines. They taunted the troops, throwing rocks and water bottles at them and kicking one repeatedly as he was helped away by two comrades. Purportedly protesting a young man's disappearance,...

Tapachula is near the Guatemalan border and besides immigrants from Central American countries, there has been a recent influx of African immigrants entering Mexico seeking to eventually get to the U.S. The El Universal story centered...

Shooters broke into the house in a mountainous area known as Sierra Negra early on Friday morning and killed five women, four men and two girls, before fleeing on foot, according to the state attorney general's office. Two other girls with chest and stomach wounds were taken to a hospital in nearby Tehuacan. Vicente Lopez de la Vega, a mayor from the city of Coxcatlan, said it was not immediately clear if the shooting was the result of a family feud or organized crime.

Thu , 4:01 PM ET MEXICO CITY - A human head washes up on an Acapulco beach. Protesters hassle visitors at makeshift checkpoints in the colonial city of Oaxaca. And in Mexico City, leftist demonstrators turn the tourist draws of Reforma Avenue and the Zocalo plaza into sprawling, ragtag protest camps. Growing political unrest and drug violence are making foreigners think twice about visiting Mexico, where the $11.8 billion tourism industry is the country's third-largest legal source of income, after oil and remittances from migrants in the United States. Mexico has been struggling since last fall, when Hurricane Wilma hit...
