President Joe Biden pushed for more gun control on Monday, even though it was Memorial Day, a national patriotic holiday. “The Constitution, the Second Amendment was never absolute,” Biden said to reporters. The president spoke to reporters about gun control as he returned to Washington, DC, from Delaware for Memorial Day ceremonies. Biden falsely claimed again that Americans were unable to purchase a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed, despite being repeatedly fact-checked as false by even the Washington Post and Politifact. “You couldn’t buy a cannon when the Second Amendment was passed and you couldn’t go out and...

The FReeper Canteen Observes ------------------------Memorial Day 2022 ------------------------ HistoryMemorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet (see below) carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the...

Memorial Day in Light of Our Very Turbulant Day This Memorial Day we think of those who gave their last full measure on our behalf as Americans; to preserve our freedoms and liberties in rightness, which only come from Almighty God (John 8:32, 36, Gal. 1:4, 3:13, 5:1, Titus 2:14). There can NEVER be TRUE liberty in this fallen world without a saving relationship to our Creator and apart from the firm adherence to Almighty God's moral absolutes (Prov. 14:34). Our Founding Fathers knew this to be true and have communicated this to us in their writings and in our...

A quick recap: Amateur photographer Frank Glick was on his way to work when he drove through Fort Snelling National Cemetery early one morning. He spotted a bald eagle through the mist, perched on a gravestone, and snapped shots with his aging but ever-present camera. Nice shot, he thought. An acquaintance saw the photo and suggested that he see if the deceased soldier had any living relatives who might want it. Indeed, Maurice Ruch's widow was alive and well and delighted to receive a copy of the eagle watching over her beloved husband. Glick's friend called me. Nice story, I...

The New York Times on Memorial Day weekend blamed American citizens for record-high gas prices, instead of President Biden’s war on American energy. As gas prices reached another record on Saturday of $4.60 per gallon, up 45 cents from one month ago, according to AAA, many Americans are looking to enjoy their holiday weekend by getting out of town using a gas-powered vehicle. Yet the Times on Friday slammed American drivers for over-consuming gasoline.

Where our Sailors Rest. “If you ever want to sleep with a blonde again, you had better shoot down these bastards as soon as they come up” – a destroyer captain motivates his exhausted crew shortly before a kamikaze attack. The sea-battle toll for Okinawa that ended on June 21st 1945 was 36 U.S. warships sunk and 368 damaged. Almost 5,000 sailors were killed in action and another 5,000 wounded. War naturally conjures images of courageous infantrymen. Gettysburg, Flanders Fields and not the Coral Sea or Leyte Gulf. Too often forgotten are the heroic Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine...

Even though Memorial Day is three weeks away, Chicago police officials are ramping up staffing to head off possible holiday weekend violence later this month. An internal CPD memo obtained by the ABC7 I-Team Monday night, and now being read at police district roll calls, orders that all days off be canceled for one full week between May 24 and 31. Officers may also be put on 12-hour work shifts during that time "if operational needs arise," according to the memo. It is expected that downtown retail corridors will get special attention during that period as well. CPD has increased...

President Donald Trump announced Monday his plan for a political rally in Casper, Wyoming. The president is expected to rally with Harriet Hageman, a Republican primary challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY). The rally is scheduled for Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 4:00 PM MDT on Memorial Day weekend. Hageman was chosen by Trump in September 2021 to challenge Cheney despite a crowded field of interested candidates. “Unlike RINO Liz Cheney, Harriet is all in for America First. Harriet has my Complete and Total Endorsement in replacing the Democrats’ number one provider of sound bites, Liz Cheney,” Trump wrote at...

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is standing her ground. Mace's house was vandalized over Memorial Day weekend. Since then, she goes about her business armed as police search for the culprit. "When they show up to your house, and physically just, you know, try to destroy it with graffiti, it's personal and it's invasive and it's violating, and it doesn't feel good," said Mace, according to Fox News. "I now go to the gun range almost weekly to practice shooting," she said. Mace warned anyone coming at her or her family in a June tweet.

Republican Rep. Pete Meijer appeared to condemn members of his own party as 'treacherous snakes' in a Memorial Day message that accused them of 'salivating for civil war.' Meijer, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and as a conflict analyst in Afghanistan, voted to impeach President Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and his latest broadside followed calls by some Trump supporters to secede from the United States. 'I struggle with Memorial Day,' he wrote in the first of string of tweets that criticized the 'holier than thous' deploying 'hot takes.'

Students in Washington DC eagerly signed a fake petition to ‘cancel Memorial Day’, agreeing that the holiday “celebrates American Imperialism.”Campus Reform reporter Addison Smith conducted the experiment to get an idea of how many students would happily forget about the day of remembrance for fallen US heroes.Smith managed to get 50 signatures in a short time, with some condemning the holiday before even reading the petition. One student said “I don’t think Memorial Day should be a thing that we celebrate… I feel like it’s a celebration of U.S. imperialism and colonialism.”The student added “I didn’t really think in this way...

Flanders Fields, Belgium, 1915: Poppies, the hue of human blood, blow in the gentle breeze. The scarlet blooms decorate thousands of Allied soldier graves. Graves of mud transfused with the blood of fallen brothers. 1,043 American soldiers perished in Belgium during World War I, 368 of whom are interred at Flanders Field American Cemetery. Today, Memorial Day, we remember their courage—and the courage of all American veterans—by revisiting the story of the vermilion poppies of Flanders Fields.Flanders Fields is the name for WWI battlefields on the border of northern Belgium and France. The Battle of Passchendaele and the Second Battle...

Some years ago my wife bought her Dad a book called "A Father's Legacy" which has blank pages for Fathers to write thoughts on memories of various activities that affected their own lives. One page asked the question, "If you were in the Armed Forces, how did your service affect your life?" He entered the Korean war as an infantryman and carried a Browning Automatic Rifle and a 1911 in his holster. I have a photo of him fresh off a combat patrol holding his BAR at his side & it was almost as tall next to him as he...
