• How does a guy author two memoirs and . . . well, nothing else?

Where's the paper trail on this guy Obama's writing? I've published a dozen novels and half a dozen nonfiction books and edited newspapers and magazines (I'm not a real journalist, honest. I used to be that way, but I'm just a fella now). Done some ghosting and teaching of writing, too. Nobody, but nobody publishes a polished memoir, let alone two (and forget that it's by the age 47 at that), until there's been a few signs of brilliance earlier. Where's the early signs of writing genius? The college literary magazine? Freelance pieces? Poetry? Fiction? Works that didn't sell so...

...Most fascinating is the contrast that existed in each day. One minute he is discussing possible U.S. action in the Middle East, the next he’s planning the recovery of the American economy from the devastation of the Carter administration, then his focus switches on a dime to the rebellious nature of his kids Ron and Patti....

NEW YORK. Senator Edward Kennedy, the elder statesman of the US political clan scarred so often by tragedy, is to publish his memoirs in a deal reportedly worth eight million dollars, AFP reports. The reported advance would vault the younger brother of president John F. Kennedy to the top ranks of high-earning US political diarists, including former president Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary. "I've been fortunate in my life to grow up in an extraordinary family and to have a front-row seat at many key events in our nation's history," the 75-year-old Kennedy said in a statement. "I hope...

NEW YORK - Now that Oprah has spoken, and forgiven, don't count on any major changes in James Frey's "A Million Pieces" or in how publishers ensure the accuracy of memoirs. With the force of a Supreme Court ruling, Oprah Winfrey phoned in to "Larry King Live" this week, at the end of an hour-long interview with Frey, and reaffirmed her support for his memoir of addiction. She declared that the allegations that Frey had fabricated some parts _ including a three-month prison stint that apparently never happened _ were "much ado about nothing" and that the book should be...

NEW YORK — In the paperback edition of "My Life," President Clinton (search) acknowledges that his memoir may have been too long, recounts some friendly faces from his book tour and some odder ones sighted under the influence of anesthesia as he underwent heart surgery last September. "At first I saw a series of dark faces, like death masks, flying toward me and being crushed," writes Clinton, whose book comes out May 31 in both trade and mass market paperback. "Then I saw circles of light with the faces of Hillary, Chelsea, and others I cared about flying toward me,...

WASHINGTON -- Sensitive national-security information was mistakenly released by the Treasury Department to former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, but no criminal statutes were violated, records show.

Mr. O'Neill drew on some of the material -- part of a cache of 19,000 documents -- for a memoir released in January that was critical of President Bush. When a document stamped "Secret" was displayed on a CBS "60 Minutes" episode concerning the book, the Treasury Department sought an investigation.

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AP) - When 21-year-old Marine Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin was killed in Iraq last year, a military report recorded his death without elaboration. "Your son was killed in action today. He was conducting a security patrol with his company this morning in enemy territory," the first lines read. The official style contrasts sharply with 23 pages of heartbreaking vignettes written by Austin's mother, De'on Miller of Lovington, and titled "Undone: A Chronicle of Grief." In a raw and emotionally charged style, she told of her reaction when two Marines standing in her front yard broke...

Palm Beach County bookstores that stocked former President Bill Clinton's memoirs were spared long lines by a long shot. "It's a real slow day, actually," said Thomas Negley of the independently owned Classics Bookstore in Palm Beach. Of the 60 copies his store received, 10 had sold by 3 p.m. Tuesday, Negley said. "And those were pre-orders." National chains seldom offer specific sales figures, but Traci McCarron, merchandise supervisor at Borders Books & Music in the Palm Beach Mall, said My Life was selling quickly there. "When we opened, we had people waiting outside specifically for this book," she said....

We can allow Madonna her self-healing quest to "discover her inner light" in the wisdom of the Kaballah, but such a mission seems a little painful when set out in the memoirs of the former leader of the free world. Bill Clinton's descriptions in his forthcoming autobiography, My Life, of his inner "demons", and his teenage terror at his first sexual urges, might have been better left to the "relationship therapy" sessions he attended in 1998 with his wife, Hillary. The ex-president's psychological self-portrait of a man leading "parallel lives" – outward confidence masking inner turmoil and weakness – is...

"It was portrayed as a personal and political decision on his part," says a publicity associate for Knopf, the publisher of Clinton's upcoming book. "We could have held off until after November and still made a huge push for Christmas. We could easily have had him doing advance publicity...

Excerpt from the chapter on the Dayton peace accords..... "So there we were. We'd been holed up at Dayton for far to long. I kept explaining to the both of them that all we had to do was reach some sort of understanding and we could go home. But they wouldn't budge. I decided to let them cool off for a bit. I pulled out a box of cigars and offered one to each of them. I tell you I've never seen two enemies agree so quickly. They swore that they'd become the best of friends just grabbed their...

IS THIS HOW THE CLINTONS WILL DEFEAT KERRY? Your intrepid Talkmaster has long said that the Clintons will find some way to torpedo the candidacy of John Kerry. Say what you will, but there are two big-time Democrats who do not want to see Kerry win in November ... and their names are Bill and Hillary. They are purportedly related, but only on paper and by virtue of the fact that they are the sire and dam of one 20-something female. The Clintons know that if Kerry wins in November he will surely run again in 2008. That is unacceptable...

Your new memoirs, "An Enduring Love: My Life With the Shah," offer a reverential look at your late husband, Reza Pahlavi, who ruled Iran from 1941 until he was toppled in 1979. He was above all a patriot who wanted progress and modernity in our country. I tell my life as I lived it. In the 25 years since he was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution and you fled to the United States for safety, have you ever been back to Iran? No. The Islamic Republic put me on their death list. The people of Iran were promised a paradise...

One of the biggest political events of 2004 may have nothing to do with the presidential election. It's the arrival of Bill Clinton's memoirs. The ex president is trying to finish his book in the next four months so it can be published at midyear. The book, to be published by Random House, will be the story of his life through his tumultuous presidency. Insiders say that it will have plenty of score settling with what his wife called the "vast right-wing conspiracy" but that it will also have quite a bit about his Arkansas boyhood. To hone his memories,...

The book came out for her 65th birthday, the 14th October 2003. Twenty-four years after the start of her exile, away from Iran where she was crowned empress, Farah has finally decided to speak, to open her heart and the gates of her memories. The manuscript of her memoirs, Farah had written many years ago. Hundreds of typed pages, read and reread, locked in her drawer. Her secret history, everything she had wanted to say during her twenty years of reign and twenty years in exile. How many times did her intimate circle, her publisher friends beg her to write...

Sen. Trent Lott says he'll sign a deal with an unidentified publisher this week to pen his memoirs. The Mississippi Republican says he plans to tell all about the 1994 Republican revolution, initiated when voters gave control of the House and Senate to the GOP. Lott also plans to give readers a behind-the-scenes look at former President Clinton's impeachment and Lott's loss of his leadership job. Lott was ousted as Senate Republican leader last year after he made racially insensitive remarks at a party for then-Sen. Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party.
