Charles Darwin once famously wrote of his gradual loss of ability to enjoy music or any of the other simple joys of life, post-Theory; and I must say that at times I understand what he meant. For entirely different reasons (chemical, not spiritual), I, too, often feel incapable of discerning the bright joys of quotidian life as I used to. Yet even though the smell of life's roses goes sometimes undetected by my nose, I have faith that roses still smell sweet — and that faith is enough. So it was in 2009. Though in many ways a cherry pit...

In 1937, U.S. Senator Josiah Bailey of North Carolina was concerned that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his New Deal programs were leading America and North Carolina down the road to collectivism. Although he did not oppose every attempt at government intervention, Senator Bailey believed that limitations should be placed on government growth. In 1937, the nation experienced an economic recession, and partisan lines blurred as Republicans and conservative Democrats formed a coalition to protest Roosevelt’s attempt to “pack the court.” That year, FDR placed the “responsibility for pulling the nation out of economic recession on business interests,” writes historian...

Mark Levin asked me to post the link to where you can download a pdf of the epilogue, 'A Conservative Manifesto,' from his book 'Liberty and Tyranny' from his web site. Feel free to spread the word. (For the benefit of the uninformed, the book is by a patriot. If you are a lib, it is far better than free government cheese. ;-)

Steve Miller, a fellow CFP contributor sent out an email blast last night. In his note he included examples of the HR3200 language including a link to the copy available through the library of congress. That’s one of things I really appreciate about Steve, he is dogged when it comes to research. No wonder the powers that be incessantly work to silence him. HR3200 is a beautifully woven web of governmental Orwellian doubletalk. For those under the age of 40, that is a reference to George Orwell’s novel 1984. Check it out and cross reference it to Obama’s last few...

While President Barack Obama and Congress have been pushing ahead with an agenda that would dramatically increase the size and scope of the federal government, a book advocating strictly limited government has been riding at the top of the nonfiction bestseller lists. Over the past 19 weeks, Mark Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto” has never ranked lower than No. 3 on The New York Times best seller list—and it ranked No. 3 for only one of those weeks. The book has been No. 1 on the list for 12 weeks, and No. 2 for six. It has already...

President Obama's universal healthcare plan may move him one step closer to his goal of allowing unlimited access to abortion-on-demand. White House budget director Peter Orszag was asked by host Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday if he would rule out including taxpayer funding of abortions in the president's government-run healthcare plan. Orszag: "Uh, I, I think that that will wind up being part of the debate. I'm not prepared to say explicitly that right now. It's obviously a controversial issue, and it's one of the questions that is playing out in this debate." Wallace: "So you're not prepared to...

On Obama's agenda, according to his White House website, is the goal to "encourage diversity in media ownership." Obama elaborates on the site that his aim is to "encourage diversity in the ownership of broadcast media, promote the development of new media outlets for expression of diverse viewpoints, and clarify the public interest obligations of broadcasters who occupy the nation's spectrum." The plan apparently aligns with longstanding Democratic suggestions to resurrect the "Fairness Doctrine." The policy was abandoned in 1987 under President Reagan when there were 75 radio talk shows in the U.S. Reagan opposed the policy because it required...

In Sarcelles, a northern suburb, I walked through a crowd of black children yesterday who were arguing about which of them was "le plus Obama" -- the most like Obama. As it has done all over Europe, the election of a US president called Barack Hussein has given a lift to minorities who feel marooned outside the mainstream. This weekend, the imminent arrival in the White House of someone with an African Muslim name has prompted a new campaign for racial integration, supported by Carla Bruni, President Sarkozy's wife. Yazid Zabeg, an Algerian-born millionaire and the JDD Sunday newspaper have...

It may turn out to be the stuff worthy of mention in half a news cycle or it may be a lasting point of historical reference. In terms of its political significance, I expect it will be the former. In terms of the long history of evangelicals trying to situate themselves within what they view as the larger culture, I expect it will have at least a minor place in any future discussion of our religious and cultural circumstance. “An Evangelical Manifesto: A Declaration of Evangelical Identity and Public Commitment” was rolled out at the National Press Club on May...

Some prominent Christian leaders said this week that they will not sign the “An Evangelical Manifesto,†listing reasons such as vague wording and theological differences. The manifesto’s definition of evangelical itself was among the top concerns for some leaders who refused to sign the document. The document’s description for evangelicals is “Christians who define themselves, their faith, and their lives according to the Good News of Jesus of Nazareth.†Several evangelical leaders said that while the definition is true, it is too broad and therefore not a good definition to distinguish who evangelicals are. “Those are wonderful words filled with...

Whose 'Evangelical Manifesto'?Warren Smith - Guest Columnist - 4/17/2008 6:00:00 AM If all goes according to plan, on or about May 7, a group of evangelical leaders -- including the Rev. Rick Warren (of Saddleback Church and "Purpose Driven Life" fame) and Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals -- will publish a document to be called "An Evangelical Manifesto: The Washington Declaration of Identity and Public Commitment." Though the document has been circulating around the Internet for a month, it has been "embargoed." For purposes of our discussion here, I will honor the embargo and not delve...

Eight House Democrats were mailed a letter and photo of a Times Square recruiting station in Manhattan before it was bombed this morning, according to House insiders. The letter did not contain any specific threats against the lawmakers or the site, but the U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI are now investigating the matter. It was unclear which lawmakers received the letters or when, but House aides confirmed they were all Democrats. The New York Times is reporting that the "improvised explosive device" used in the attack "was 'roughly similar”' to the devices used in two earlier bombings at foreign...

A spectre is haunting the Internet -- the spectre of Digital Re-education. All the powers of the old Tech have entered into an unholy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Microsoft, Public Education, Labor Unions, The Major Telecoms, Dial-Up… The history of all hitherto existing Social Networks is the history of lowbrow genius and vis-à-vis GUI sub-systems.

Legislative and social reform ploys, ranging from affirmative action to state sponsored quota mandates for female placement in the public sector, have stripped away any semblance of professional credibility that modern women can gain. Feigning equality for all, these policies have allowed society to swap meritocracy and individual responsibility for socialism, and to women’s financial, professional, social and personal detriment.

The New Majority Committee burst onto the scene five years ago with a flurry of political gunfire and a manifesto calling for reform of the county Republican Party. A civil war erupted, with the millionaires of the New Majority funding a $300,000 takeover attempt and the GOP establishment turning from battles with Democrats to fend off the insurgency. Today when the former combatants meet, you can practically hear strains of "Kumbaya" wafting in the air. The New Majority's drive to bring an abortion-rights, pro-gun control, pro-minority faction into the party has lost its aggressive, strident tone - to the point...

Within the space of a single week, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Sen. Edward Kennedy have managed to mangle reality with op-ed pieces in two of the nation's leading newspapers. ''As an environmentalist, I support wind power,'' began RFK Jr.'s op-ed piece in the New York Times, ... Then he proceeded to once again propagate the inaccuracies repeated like mantras by those opposed to the Nantucket Sound wind farm. ''The noise of the turbines will be audible onshore. A transformer substation would house...40,000 gallons of potentially hazardous oil... The Humane Society estimates the whirling turbines could every year kill thousands...

Here are the 10 steps that Marx listed in the Communist Manifesto. Karl Marx in creating the Communist Manifesto designed these planks AS A TEST to determine whether a society has become communist or not. 1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes. Americans do these with actions such as the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (1868), and various zoning, school & property taxes. Also the Bureau of Land Management (Zoning laws are the first step to government property ownership) - On June 23, 2005 The Supreme Court ruled that local...

Akbar Ganji is the Iranian journalist and dissident who for over a month now has been on hunger strike in Iran’s most infamous prison. Arrested in 2000 and ultimately sentenced to six years in jail for criticizing the regime, most notably in a series of articles he wrote implicating former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in the murders of several dissidents and intellectuals, Ganji has become a symbol both inside Iran and out of the Islamic Republic’s techniques of repression and Iranians’ resistance. He published a powerful letter from prison after starting his hunger strike, and is reported to have recently...
