PITTSBURGH -- Five years ago, the sad goodbye to an icon began when Macy's decided to close its flagship location in downtown Pittsburgh. The void, alas, still remains. For most of that building's storied 110-plus-year-old life, until Macy's took it 15 years ago, it was Kaufmann's department store: a place where parents, whether they were working-class or well-to-do, took their babies to get fitted for their first pair of shoes; or purchased their communion dress, prom dress, wedding gown, back-to-school clothes; or bought them the sheets, furniture, toasters, pots and pans they needed to start their adult lives. It was...

Super Saturday (Dec. 21) was expected to be a bigger sales day this year than Black Friday and it did not disappoint. Bloomberg reports it was the biggest single day in US retail history: Holiday shopping set records over the weekend, with Super Saturday sales reaching $34.4 billion, the biggest single day in U.S. retail history, according to Customer Growth Partners.“Paced by the ‘Big Four’ mega-retailers — Walmart, Amazon, Costco and Target — Super Saturday was boosted by the best traffic our team has seen in years,” said Craig Johnson, president of the retail research firm…While foot traffic was...

Holiday shopping set records over the weekend, with Super Saturday sales reaching $34.4 billion, the biggest single day in U.S. retail history, according to Customer Growth Partners. “Paced by the ‘Big Four’ mega-retailers -- Walmart, Amazon, Costco and Target -- Super Saturday was boosted by the best traffic our team has seen in years,” said Craig Johnson, president of the retail research firm. Job growth and fatter wallets, along with stronger household finances, have put consumers in a buying mood this season, Johnson said. And more of them are shopping online. As retailers offer improved web platforms, online spending so...
  • Union representing Macy’s workers votes to authorize strike

A strike is looming at Macy’s stores in parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. After four months of contract negotiations, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445 voted Sunday to authorize a strike if necessary. The union represents more than 1,000 Macy’s employees in Boston, Braintree, Natick, Peabody and Warwick, Rhode Island. Local 1445 said it is fighting for more money for its workers and affordable healthcare, and will move to strike if an agreement isn’t reached soon. This isn’t the first time the union has voted to authorize a strike in recent months. In April, tens of thousands of...

Important note: this terror plot to murder thousands of American holiday shoppers was planned  by essentially the same Stalinist terror-sponsors who rule Cuba today and who receive an estimated $4 billion annually from the U.S.-- thanks mostly to Obama’s executive orders that loopholed the “Cuban embargo” half to death. For his transition team, President-elect Trump has just appointed a former Treasury Dept. official who probably ranks as the most knowledgeable American on how horribly the letter of U.S. law [the Cuban embargo] has been violated by Obama in his “opening” to the terror-sponsoring Castro regime. Consequently, nobody is better...

On the morning of November 17th, 1962, FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. took on “all the trappings of a military command post,” according to historian William Breuer. The previous night an intelligence puzzle had finally come together. The resulting picture staggered the FBI men. And these had served at their posts during WWII and the height of the Cold War. They’d seen plenty. Now they had mere days to foil a crime against their nation to rival Hideki Tojo’s.At the time (pre-Mueller! And pre-Comey!), the FBI relied heavily on “HUMINT” (Human Intelligence.) So they’d expertly penetrated the plot, identified the ringleaders...

OCALA, Fla. - Ocala police say they are looking for a woman who committed arson inside a Macy’s Tuesday morning. Officers said the woman entered the department store at the Paddock Mall shortly after 10 a.m. and walked around the store for approximately 45 minutes. Police said at some point the woman set fire to a rack of underwear. “It was a bunch of smoke rolling out and people were walking – running outside,” said Kortnee Eubanks, who was in the store at the time. “The [Macy’s] staff believe that they smelled gas, so we’re not sure if we tried...

After settling allegations that it unlawfully detained black customers, Macy’s is now picking on Asians, according to a lawsuit filed by four former employees of the company’s flagship store in Herald Square. Managers in the cosmetics and fragrance department of Macy’s flagship store “repeatedly directed … sales associates to racially profile customers of Asian descent” out of fear that they were secretly black marketers, according to a Manhattan federal lawsuit.

Macy’s is planning to pull the plug on its Fourth of July fireworks display near the Brooklyn Bridge — and revelers who counted on dazzling views in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan are seeing red. Fireworks will light up the sky above five barges on the East River between 24th and 41st streets, unlike last year’s showcase, which featured a breathtaking display near the Brooklyn Bridge, according to Macy’s reps. Scrapping the show near the iconic bridge leaves neighborhoods including Battery Park, South Street Seaport and Brooklyn Heights in the dark, angry residents and business owners said. Walmart (WMT) , the country's largest private employer, plans to eliminate roughly 1,000 corporate jobs as it looks to boost its e-commerce business and trim costs. The jobs, mainly in the human resources department, will be cut before Jan. 31, as a result of increased e-commerce spending and rising employee wages, an anonymous executive told the Wall Street Journal. When contacted by TheStreet, Walmart declined in an email to comment on the job cuts but said the company has "not made any announcements" on its current corporate structure, adding "... we are always looking for ways to operate more efficiently...

Macy’s says it is eliminating more than 10,000 jobs and plans to move forward with 68 store closures after a disappointing holiday shopping season. The department store chain also lowered its full-year earnings forecast. The retailer said Wednesday that sales at its established stores fell 2.1 percent in November and December compared to the same period last year. Macy’s Inc. pointed to changing consumer behavior and said its performance reflects the challenges that are facing much of the retail industry. As if to underscore that point, Kohl’s Corp. also reported disappointing holiday shopping numbers Wednesday. …
