  • Recruitment mechanism discovered for cancer-associated fibroblasts in common lung cancer (Trametinib stops it)

    02/03/2023 2:17:58 PM PST · by ConservativeMind · 2 replies
A team has found a mechanism of recruitment for tumor-associated cells (cancer-associated fibroblasts or CAFs), which are essential to lung adenocarcinoma, the most frequent type of cancer. These cancer-associated cells contribute to all the phases of tumor development, including metastasis. The study reveals there is a type of inhibitor drug that could be useful against the migratory advantage of these cancer-associated cells, and so could prevent their recruitment and therefore their contribution to the tumor development. "Lung adenocarcinoma represents 40% of the cases of lung cancer and it produces an early metastasis," says Jordi Alcaraz. Alcaraz found in previous studies...
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease causally linked to lung cancer

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is causally associated with lung cancer risk, according to a study. Lin Li and colleagues employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to examine the causal relationship between GERD and lung cancer. Independent single nucleotide polymorphisms that were highly linked to GERD were identified in a sample of 129,080 GERD patients. Data from genome-wide association studies were used to assess outcomes for lung cancer, including squamous cell lung cancer (LUSC) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) in 11,348 patients. To examine the potential causative association between GERD and risk for lung cancer, three MR statistical techniques were used....
  • Actinidia arguta (sarunashi) juice found to inhibit lung cancer in mice (Isoquercetin & “Hearty kiwi”)

    12/31/2022 10:17:00 AM PST · by ConservativeMind · 12 replies
Lung cancer is a leading cause of death. Among all the cancers, lung cancer has one of the lowest five-year survival rates. "Sarunashi" (Actinidia arguta) is an edible fruit cultivated in Japan's Okayama Prefecture. Using a mouse model, researchers have shown that sarunashi juice and its constituting component isoquercetin (isoQ) help prevent and reduce lung cancer. A. arguta is one of the richest sources of polyphenols and vitamin C. Previously, the researchers had demonstrated the inhibitory effect of sarunashi juice (sar-j) on mutagenesis, inflammation, and mouse skin tumorigenesis. They had identified the components of A. arguta responsible for the anti-mutagenic...
  • Black cardamom bioactives effective against lung cancer cells

    08/04/2022 8:12:38 AM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 9 replies
The main challenges associated with existing lung cancer drugs are severe side effects and drug resistance. There is hence a constant need to explore new molecules for improving the survival rate and quality of life of lung cancer patients. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, black cardamom has been used in formulations to treat cancer and lung conditions. A team of researchers studied the scientific basis behind this traditional medicinal practice and provided evidence of the cytotoxic effect of black cardamom on lung cancer cells. The research highlighted the spice as a source of potent bioactives, such as cardamonin and alpinetin, which...
  • New combination therapy shows early promise against certain lung cancers

Scientists at the Francis Crick Institute have found that using immunotherapy alongside a drug that blocks a common gene mutation in lung cancer could be a promising new combination therapy for certain types of lung tumors. Their work, published today (20 July) in Science Advances, could help select patients for clinical trials to confirm whether this combination therapy is effective in people. Around 1.8 million people die from lung cancer each year, making it the leading cause of cancer death globally. While some people are effectively treated with immunotherapy, this does not work for most patients. With only a quarter...

A blood-based tumor biomarker can predict the benefit of immunotherapy to patients with non-small cell lung cancer, according to a study. "The findings from this study will help us identify and design better blood-based biomarkers in immuno-oncology," said Young Kwang Chae, MD, MPH, MBA. Atezolizumab monotherapy, an immune checkpoint therapy, is an effective treatment for patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors have high programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. When PD-L1 is bound to the exterior of a cell, it tells roaming T-cells to leave the cell alone. Many cancers have upregulated PD-L1...
  • Noncancerous chest CT features for predicting survival in stage I lung cancer (Pulmonary artery to-aorta ratio, coronary artery calcium score, and lower thoracic skeletal muscle index, in decreasing order)

    04/14/2022 8:45:54 AM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 6 replies
According to ARRS' American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), noncancerous imaging markers on chest CT performed before stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) improve survival prediction, compared with clinical features alone. "In patients undergoing SBRT for stage I lung cancer," explained corresponding author and 2019 ARRS Scholar Florian J. Fintelmann, "higher coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, higher pulmonary artery (PA)-to-aorta ratio, and lower thoracic skeletal muscle index independently predicted worse overall survival." Fintelmann and team's retrospective study included 282 patients (168 female, 114 male; median age, 75 years) with stage I lung cancer treated with SBRT between January 2009 and June 2017....

Cigarette smoking is overwhelmingly the main cause of lung cancer, yet only a minority of smokers develop the disease. A study led by scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and published online on April 11, 2022, in Nature Genetics suggests that some smokers may have robust mechanisms that protect them from lung cancer by limiting mutations. The findings could help identify those smokers who face an increased risk for the disease and therefore warrant especially close monitoring. “This may prove to be an important step toward the prevention and early detection of lung cancer risk and away from the...

Bob Dole heaped praise on President Trump for what he described as the restoration of "strong American leadership" put on display during his trip to Europe over the past few days. Calling it a "successful trip" overall, Dole, a former Republican senator from Kansas who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1996, singled out Trump's speech in Warsaw, Poland, as being particularly important. In a statement Saturday, Dole described the speech from Wednesday as "one for the ages, a vital, eloquent, and stirring articulation of the values and shared goals that bind us together with the Polish people, and with millions...

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation "on Sunday and called out the Presidential Debate Commission for their election interference.  "I think voters are very frustrated by the corrupt debate commission, that they would cancel a second debate," McDaniel told host Margaret Brennan. "I think it feeds in to the belief that this 47 years that Joe Biden has had in DC is again protecting him from facing the voters. And Americans are frustrated that this election commission interfered with our ability to see these two candidates debate."Brennan then repeated Democratic talking points, noting the existence of...

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) appeared on Fox News’ “Hannity” this week to discuss the origins of the Steele dossier. He said it should really be called the “Simpson” dossier. Although Christopher Steele likely contributed “stories” to the dossier, and his years of experience in British intelligence lent credence to the document, Nunes believes that Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson may actually have written the majority of it. In his book “Spygate,” journalist Dan Bongino makes the same case. He points out the striking similarities between articles Simpson and his wife, Mary Jacoby wrote for the Wall Street Journal in 2007...

Donald Trump's call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen was organized by Bob Dole, a former Republican senator and the party's 1996 presidential nominee, The Wall Street Journal reports. Dole told the Journal that the law firm he is affiliated with does work with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. “It’s fair to say that we may have had some influence,” he said. Trump's Friday conversation broke decades of U.S. protocol. For several decades, the U.S. has followed the "One China" policy that doesn't acknowledge Taiwan as a nation, but instead goes along with China's view that...

Bob Dole said he is standing by Donald Trump after a decade-old recording emerged in which the Republican presidential nominee speaks in crude sexual terms about women. Mr. Dole, the Republican Party’s presidential pick in 1996, is the only former GOP nominee to express support for Mr. Trump. Reached by phone on Saturday, Mr. Dole said he had “great respect” for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who said earlier in the day that he would no longer support the party’s 2016...

Bob Dole, the 1996 GOP presidential nominee, said he's disappointed in Jeb Bush for sitting out the Republican National Convention. Dole, who initially endorsed Bush for president before the former Florida governor dropped out, said he should unite behind the party and support presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Former Kansas senator and 1996 Republican nominee Bob Dole endorsed Donald Trump for president on Friday, calling for the GOP to unite around Trump in order to defeat Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee. Dole's support gives the GOP presumptive nominee the support of another party elder on a day when other top Republicans announced their opposition. Trump inconspicuously announced the endorsement earlier on Friday at a rally in Omaha, Nebraska, as he ticked off the names of several prominent Republicans who have come around to his candidacy since he became the party's presumptive nominee earlier this week.

Based on the latest polling data, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump appears certain to win the upcoming March 8 Michigan primary and is likely to also take the corresponding race today in Kansas. A FOX 2 Detroit/Mitchell poll released on Friday shows Trump increasing his already massive lead in the Michigan primary. In the survey of likely GOP voters, Trump was picked by 42%, putting him 23% ahead of – and more than double – his nearest competitor, Ted Cruz, who sits at just 19%. Marco Rubio placed third at 15%, in a statistical tie with John Kasich....
