  • Long-term use of certain acid reflux drugs linked to higher risk of dementia (PPIs)

    08/13/2023 8:52:23 PM PDT · by ConservativeMind · 57 replies
People who take acid reflux medications called proton pump inhibitors for four-and-a-half years or more may have a higher risk of dementia compared to people who do not take these medications, according to research. This study does not prove that acid reflux drugs cause dementia; it only shows an association. "Proton pump inhibitors are a useful tool to help control acid reflux, however long-term use has been linked in previous studies to a higher risk of stroke, bone fractures and chronic kidney disease," said study author Kamakshi Lakshminarayan, MBBS, Ph.D. The study included 5,712 people, age 45 and older, who...

A mathematical model suggests that aggressively pursuing low blood pressure and cholesterol levels may not benefit, and could even harm, some patients with diabetes, according to a report in the June 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Almost all treatment guidelines for patients with diabetes suggest aggressively treating high low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) and blood pressure levels to reduce patients' risk of developing heart disease, according to background information in the article. "These recommendations, which are based on the average results of trials evaluating the relative benefits of intensive risk factor control,...

CARACAS, Venezuela – Call it the Bolivarian battle of the bulge. President Hugo Chavez said in a televised speech Friday that "there are lots of fat people" in Venezuela and advised his supporters to exercise and eat healthy to trim their waistlines. "I'm not saying fat women, because they never get fat," he added. "Women sometimes fill out." The 55-year-old leader said he himself has lost nearly 20 pounds (9 kilograms) by exercising and eating well. But Chavez, who still appears heavier than when he first took office in 1999, acknowledged that he could lose a few more pounds (kilograms)....

  • Fat Bacteria in Human Guts Tied to Obesity

Many people worry about putting on a few pounds during the holiday season. But when you reach for a Christmas cookie, keep in mind that you're not the only one who's going to enjoy that tasty treat: It will also get eaten by the bacteria living in your gut. And it turns out that the kind of bacteria living there may affect how much weight you gain. Until a couple of years ago, scientists didn't have the tools to figure out exactly what lives in a person's digestive tract. But with new genetic probes, they can do a kind of...

I need advice -- does anyone know about surgery to cure snoring? Have you had it, or do you know anyone who has had it? I've exhausted all other non-surgical possibilities (nasal strips, C-PAP oxygen masks, different mattresses, sleep positions, etc.) and nothing works for me, so I am considering surgery. The procedure is called "uvulopalatalpharyngoplasty." If you know anything about it, I'd appreciate hearing from you. In essence, I'm trying to find out: "Does this surgery work?"

SONKAJARVI, Finland -- I'm less than halfway through the World Wife Carrying Championship course when steroids suddenly make a lot of sense. Everything is going fine until my wife and I hit the water hazard. It's 3 meters deep, about 30 feet long and there is a fireman in scuba gear standing by in case of emergency. By the time I wade its length, I'm so exhausted that we do not so much step from the pool as evolve out of it, like the first amphibians to leave the oceans and crawl onto land. We switch from the traditional piggyback...

Taking your doctor's advice to lose weight could also lighten your tax bill under an Internal Revenue Service (news - web sites) (IRS) ruling announced Tuesday. The costs for participating in weight-loss programs, aside from special foods, may be tax deductible, the IRS said. But make sure the programs are in response to a physician's diagnosis, not just to shape up or look better. "Such costs are nondeductible personal expenses," the IRS said. The ruling is meant to recognize obesity's increasingly accepted status as a disease. To be eligible for a deduction, a taxpayer must have qualifying medical expenses of...
