Security officials identified the man as James Henry, 66, a retired U.S. Army officer who arrived in Cairo from the Gulf kingdom of Bahrain on Aug. 25. Henry was detained by army troops in the turbulent region of northern Sinai three days later while making his way to the border crossing with Gaza in the town of Rafah

Why would CNN’s Jake Tapper bring a U.S. soldier on his show and blatantly insult him and the 11 SEALS and 8 soldiers who died alongside him in combat in Afghanistan? Answer: He wouldn’t. He didn’t. But thanks to conservative radio personality and world renowned dingbat Glenn Beck and The Blaze‘s Oliver Darcy, Tapper was still up at 2 a.m. this morning arguing for journalism to happen. In other words, he wanted his words interpreted fairly. He wanted what he voiced Friday to be spelled out without the glaze of crazy. On his program Friday, Tapper interviewed former Navy SEAL...

I think that the latest cinematic box-office fiasco, “The Lone Ranger,” epitomizes the economic and employment recovery: big stars and zads of temporary help. Johnny Depp got his usual staggering paycheck for “The Lone Ranger.” Despite Depp’s popularity at the international box office, The Lone Ranger turned in a soft performance as it began rolling out overseas, grossing $29.4 million from 24 markets for a worldwide opening total of $78.3 million. Westerns have always been a tough sell with foreign audiences. THE LONE RANGER Particularly when the film’s star wears a dead crow on his head for the entire film....

I attended a screener of the Lone Ranger movie last night, the director Gore Verbinski dropped by and introduced the opening of the film. In summary (and without spoilers): The Lone Ranger character starts out as weak and naive and ends the movie as a weak and naive but now following Tonto. I struggle to remember if any of the white male characters were portrayed as anything other than evil, racist, greedy, inept, or religious zealots. Even the military is not spared; the cavalry captain is portrayed as Hollywood’s stereotypical ”General Custer” type replete with Van Dyke beard and long...

In 2008 NASA decided to send one of the heights of modern art — The Beatles' 1969 track "Across the Universe" — into the cosmos. And for 2013, one of the pillars of internet folk art is preparing for takeoff: An animated GIF is about to be sent into space for the first time ever. The message will be beamed over a giant radio dish in California tomorrow as part of the inaugural transmission of Lone Signal, a project that's hoping to communicate with extraterrestrials. The GIF will be sent toward Gliese 526, a potentially habitable solar system 17.6...

9 Considerations for the Lone Wolf Max Velocity started the topic and then American Mercenary added to it. Time for me to toss .02 cents into the topic. 1) You do not want to fight. It doesn't matter if you retired yesterday as an E-9 as a JSOC Jedi from the coolest Tier 1 unit. Five rednecks with rifles probably have your number, if not today then next week. 2) Force multipliers matter even more when you have less force. I would call a guy with a NOD equal to 2 or 3 guys without them at night. If you...

A lone protester paced the state Capitol parking lot Tuesday holding a U.S. Marine Corps flag and sign that read, “Prosecute Blumenthal Stolen Valor Act.” The protester, Jim Bancroft of Windsor Locks, says he served in as a U.S. Marine from 1977 to 1981 and claims that he has defended Attorney General Richard Blumenthal in the past against accusations regarding his military service because during conversations, the two had Blumenthal had always said he served state-side as a reservist. While the two had nothing in common politically, “I thought he was a decent guy” until he watched the video,...

The only Republican to vote for the House Democrats' health care reform bill said he voted his conscience, putting aside concerns about the cost in hopes of providing health care access to all Americans. Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao of Louisiana said he cast "a very difficult vote" on Saturday, when the House passed the bill 220-215, just over the 218 required for passage. "But at the end of the day I have to vote on the needs of my district down here in New Orleans and vote according to my conscience," Mr. Cao said in an inte

Editor's Note: Local radio's lone liberal voice Thursday, May 20, 2004 Copyright © Las Vegas Mercury The myth of the "liberal media" endures, despite the fact that it's an absurd notion. It survives, in part, because the right-wing media have found it to be an effective mantra to boost circulation and ratings. Conservatives clearly have the upper hand on television, where it's increasingly difficult to find a liberal voice (Lisa Simpson being a dependable exception). The cable news talk shows pretend to present both sides of issues when in reality a centrist is usually trotted out to represent a counterpoint...

Britain is put on high alert for lone terrorists By John Steele, Crime Correspondent (Filed: 07/09/2002) Lone terrorists who want to exploit the anniversary of the September 11 hijacks by attacking British targets are being seen as a significant potential threat, intelligence chiefs have warned. They fear that unknown bombers or gunmen unconnected to major terrorist groups may be planning to strike. Suicide bombers are also a potential threat. Behind the police concern lie the cases of Richard Reid, the "shoe bomber", and Kerim Chatty, who is accused in Sweden of trying to hijack a Ryanair flight to London. Scotland...
