Hoop skirts will go the way of Confederate uniforms as special-event attire for Greek organizations at the University of Georgia — into the past. The hoop skirt ban came after UGA Student Affairs administrators met Monday with some UGA fraternity and sorority leaders, including representatives of the UGA chapters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Kappa Alpha fraternities, both of which have deep roots in the Southern Confederacy. The ban comes a week after the University of Oklahoma expelled two SAE fraternity members and shut down the university’s SAE chapter because of a racist video made by members. In the video,...

A much-hailed law that restricted the opening of new stand-alone fast-food restaurants in one of the poorest sections of Los Angeles did not curb obesity or improve diets, a new study found. City lawmakers passed the zoning ordinance in 2008 that limited the opening or expansion of fast-food outlets in a 32-square-mile area south of Interstate 10 that struggles with high obesity rates and other health problems. The law, believed to be the first effort of its kind by a major city to improve public health, did not ban new eateries in strip malls. The research by the Rand Corp....

The case of the abandoned dog in Slidell has "morphed into a case of irresponsible ownership," according to Humane Society of Louisiana Director Jeff Dorson. The dog - "Butterbean" - remained missing late Tuesday (March 17). Dorson went to Slidell after a woman snapped a photo of a mixed German shepherd flat-out chasing a pickup truck supposedly driven by a man who had cruelly ditched the dog at a gas station. The incident drew national attention. Through interviews with locals, the Humane Society learned the pure abandonment narrative doesn't really apply to Butterbean, but it's not as if she has...

Straight Talk from Senator Knox Dangerous Tools March 15, 2015 What’s the most dangerous thing you will do today? You will drive your car. Today I drove about 150 miles on two lane highways. Multiple times I came within a few feet of a head on collision with another vehicle, traveling at relative combined speeds of well over 120 miles per hour. A car is a tool, an object used to help us accomplish a given purpose. Why do we use such a dangerous tool that puts us so often, so close to certain death? We consider the risk worth...
