The basics of the life and death—on Wednesday at age 97— of Art Linkletter were widely reported in the mainstream media. That’s only fitting, as he did more than just about anyone to shape the form, if not the content, of modern media. His House Party program began on radio in 1944 and moved to television in 1954—where it stayed until 1969. That program made Linkletter one of the most famous men in America to baby boomers and their parents. But he actually had been on television since the late 1940s. Many families in the post-war era got their first...

Art Linkletter, a longtime television and radio host, passed away today at the ripe old age of 97. In the 50s and 60s, he hosted the well-known variety show, “Art Linkletter’s House Party“, which featured conversation with celebrities of the day. But he may be best remembered for the wonderful interactions betweeh himself and an amazing assortment of children on his show, “Kids Say the Darnest Things“. Mr. Linkletter showed himself to be an affable host, and clearly had a terrific rapport with his young visitors. I have vague memories of seeing the show (in flickering black & white) as...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Art Linkletter, who hosted the popular TV shows "People Are Funny" and "House Party" in the 1950s and 1960s, has died. He was 97 . . . The primetime "People Are Funny," which began on radio in 1942 and ran on TV from 1954 to 1961, emphasized slapstick humor and audience participation — things like throwing a pie in the face of a contestant who couldn't tell his Social Security number in five seconds, or asking him to go out and cash a check written on the side of a watermelon.

It may not be as provocative as comedian George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words," a free-speech case that went to the Supreme Court in the 1970s. But a Washington area nonprofit group wants to take the U.S. government to the high court for banning the use of "Social Security" on its mailing envelopes.

Art Linkletter was abandoned as an infant, adopted and raised by a preacher. He first showed his entrepreneurial spirit by sorting through discarded lemons at a local fruit-packing plant, picking the least-obviously rotten fruit, and selling it door-to-door. He hosted House Party and People Are Funny both on radio and later on newfangled television, and is best remembered for his interviews with children, Kids Say the Darndest Things. Linkletter's daughter Diane allegedly committed suicide in 1969, under the influence of LSD, he says. An autopsy revealed no drugs in Diane's system, but that didn't stop the "killed by LSD" story,...

February 24, 2005OP-ED COLUMNISTSwifties Slime Again By MAUREEN DOWD ASHINGTON Instead of trying to destroy AARP, Republicans should be signing up the seniors' lobby to find Osama. AARP's super-relentless intelligence network is certainly better than that doddering C.I.A's. Osama has to have turned 50, and AARP somehow knows where everyone who has turned 50 lives. But no. The same Republicans who used to love AARP when it helped them pass the president's prescription drug plan now hate AARP because it is against the president's plan to privatize Social Security. "They are the boulder in the middle of the highway...
