So a 22-year-old son of Hollywood privilege goes on a murder spree, killing 6 and then himself. People who write for a living mount their favorite hobby horses and tell us “what it all means.” Since we are all critics now, I want to get in on the action. What do we know? Quite a lot, actually. The killer wrote a “manifesto:” apparently a must-do for people who want to go out with a bang, and who have the time and leisure to chronicle their lives. I read the whole thing and it's fascinating because it reads like a movie...

Eureka, California (CNN) -- Police had a man who is suspected of killing a Catholic priest in his California rectory, but they let him go. It was mere hours before the slaying of the Rev. On New Year's Eve, Humboldt County sheriff's deputies had responded to reports that a person was "acting strangely" and arrested Bullock, taking him to jail. But Bullock, police said, was "rejected" from the facility "due to his erratic behavior." Bullock, 43, was then moved to a nearby hospital, "where he...

President Barack Obama is criticized every day for the problems and difficulties associated with the Affordable Care Act. But in the long term, it's likely history will scrutinize the CIA’s use of drone strikes during his administration with a far more critical eye.

Gov. Jan Brewer said Wednesday that she does not want U.S. House Republicans to succeed in their bid to shut down the Affordable Care Act, saying it would “devastate” the state budget. Brewer said she has never been a fan of “Obamacare.’’ And she pointed out she was among several governors who sued — unsuccessfully — to have it declared unconstitutional. But the governor said once it was clear the law would take effect, she sought ways to have Arizona take advantage of a key provision rewarding states that expand their Medicaid programs. In this state, that is the Arizona...

Armed with a Remington shotgun and two stolen handguns, suspected shooter Aaron Alexis unleashed a barrage of gunfire on innocent people at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, prompting immediate and knee-jerk cries for gun control and “common sense” reforms to curb gun violence. But the details of this case prove once again the ineffectiveness of gun control. Wasting no time and taking full advantage of the emotional climate of yet another highly-publicized gun crime, Diane Feinstein asked “When will enough be enough?”, and accused Congress of “shirking its responsibility” of preventing gun violence. White House spokesman James Carney said...
