The California congressional delegation is concerned that the U.S. Border Patrol went too far last month to protect the border. In a two-week period, its Mobile Patrol Group arrested 420 suspected illegal aliens at "interior checkpoints" in California communities within 100 miles of the U.S.-Mexican border. The delegation asked the Department of Homeland Security to determine if its Border Patrol department overstepped its bounds. There are bigger immigration issues than a territorial turf fight about which bureaucracy has jurisdiction.

NEW YORK – President Bush faces a new political danger in the last place he wanted: the economy. In the first major economic news since the passage of his tax cut, the nation's unemployment rate has surged to 6.4 percent, a nine-year high, and a level that causes newspaper headlines to swell. The latest numbers are the highest of the President's term and may make it more difficult for him to continue to...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.WASHINGTON - The unemployment rate for Hispanics in June was 8.4 percent, higher than the national rate, but little changed from last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday. Nationally, the rate was 6.4 percent, up from 6.1 percent in May. How that affects Texas, where about 32 percent of the population is Hispanic, depends on the health of the industries where Hispanics typically find jobs. The Labor Department does not do a monthly breakdown of state unemployment rates, but regional economist Jerome Watters said job losses in Texas have been...
