WASHINGTON (CNN) – The first primary contest of the 2012 election cycle is more than two years away, but some Republicans are already voting … sort of. The National Republican Senatorial Committee — which assists GOP Senate candidates — e-mailed a "Proxy Ballot" to some supporters on Monday asking them which Republican leader is their top choice for the Republican presidential nomination. The survey also asks Republicans to rank the importance of issues like health care, abortion rights and taxes.

"You're the problem!" one crowd member hollered. "You voted for TARP," yelled another. Boos interrupted Cornyn, who won his second term last year, after he said: "This is a day of celebration, the day we celebrate our Founders, who defied empires and declared their independence."

On the eve of the White House immigration summit a few days ago, NumbersUSA - a group determined to shut the borders to illegal immigrants -- tried to drum up donations by bashing Sen. John Cornyn and his "frightening pro-amnesty" stance. Immigrant advocates don't exactly view Cornyn as a top ally, so a fierce attack from the right is a bit surprising.
