And this despite no wrongdoing or accusation of wrongdoing by the church. In January of 2021, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Receiver filed a federal lawsuit against Messiah demanding payment to...

  • How billboards warning motorists of I-80 bridge safety concerns created one of 2019′s biggest stories

Will County billboards that warned motorists about bridges stoked public-safety fears and helped convince state lawmakers of the need to approve a $45 billion infrastructure plan. The billboards and their impact arguably deserve to rank among the top political stories of the year, if not the decade. Construction unions paid to display the messages “Cross bridge at your own risk” and “Bridge ahead in critical condition” on electronic billboards near Interstate 80 bridges over the Des Plaines River in Joliet. The billboards heightened motorists’ fears about crumbling infrastructure and generated bipartisan support for the $45 billion Rebuild Illinois program. Marc...

Nightmare on Hickory Street, Part 1: After the savage strangling of two young men, two of the accused killers decided to have sex atop the corpses of the victims, police learned. Joshua Miner remembered his teenage girlfriend confiding “years back that she wanted to have sex with a dead guy,” states a police report documenting last month’s double murder on Hickory Street. That's why Miner got the idea to ask girlfriend Alisa Massaro to have sex with him on the corpses of two men he's accused of helping to kill, police said. Massaro “made a smirk on her face” and...

Full post to come, but for now, at Roman Noon today, B16 named Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, 63, head of Ohio's Steubenville church since 2002, as bishop of Joliet. In the suburban Chicagoland post -- whose 660,000-some Catholics comprise roughly 17 times the size of Conlon's current fold -- the incoming point-man for the USCCB's child and youth protection efforts succeeds Peter Sartain, who was launched to the archbishopric of Seattle last September. A native of Cincinnati and alum in the canons from St Paul's in Ottawa, the appointee served in parish work and as Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk's chancellor prior...

Traveling Tea Party draws thousands September 8, 2009 BY CASEY CORA Billed as a protest against taxes and government spending, the national Tea Party's stop in New Lenox became a gathering of local conservatives and a call to action on national political issues. "As much as we say the system failed us, maybe we failed the system as well," said Joliet resident Tim Kraulidis, who helped organize Monday's event. "We can't complain ... that our legislators are doing things we don't want them to do and then we don't engage the system." About 6,000 people packed the hillside venue at...

I agree with many of the comments and concerns of the bloggers on both sides of the aisle regarding this Larry Walsh issue. But this is happening everywhere. The newspaper selects the questions they want to ask, politicians claim “no comment” or “I don’t know much about this or that but an investigation is underway”, running politicians start slinging mud because they cant hack it in the real world and need to take on ego trip. And when they get elected its business as usual just with different faces. Now, everyone one of the bloggers here have great ambitions, passions...

May prove LaSalle explored Mississippi before Marquette QUINCY - What's certain is that something's written in the stone. What's less certain is whether the markings have any historical significance. Now, University of Illinois scientists have agreed to examine the limestone slab some believe proves French explorer Robert Cavelier de LaSalle was the first white man to see the upper Mississippi River in 1671 -- two years before Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet made their famous trek. The foot high, 8-inch wide stone, which was found by a farmer in the early 1900s in Ellington Township north of Quincy, has...

In the midst of everything going on, we've been remiss in keeping Bishop J. Peter Sartain's arrival in the diocese of Joliet in mind.... The installation of the Memphis-born, Sant'Anselmo-trained sacramentalist, who had served six years as bishop of Little Rock, as head of the 625,000-member suburban Chicago diocese took place earlier today. Succeeding the retiring Bishop Joseph Imesch, Sartain was appointed 16 May, a provision overshadowed by Donald Wuerl's unveiling as archbishop of Washington. The Chitown Tribune ran an interview with Bishop Sartain at the weekend. "These kind of transitions are challenging because you really come to love...

More than 90 people were ticketed and fined for trying to use someone else's disability placard to get a closer parking space at the NASCAR Tropicana 400 over the weekend, officials said. Thirty-nine drivers were ticketed Sunday at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, adding to the 52 drivers cited Saturday, state officials said. Each citation carries a possible $100 fine and a mandatory court appearance, they said. "There were plenty of opportunities to turn away," Secretary of State Police Sgt. Theresa Kazimour said of those ticketed. The secretary of state's office started the crackdown after receiving complaints that able-bodied drivers...
