Dying of a stroke on April 7, 2007, Johnny Hart, creator of the caveman comic strip B.C., could not have arranged a departure with more evocative symbolism. He died with his boots on, so to speak—at his drawing board, like the dedicated brandisher of pencil and pen he was. But he wasn’t at his drawing board because he was chained to it, like most of his brethren, by the perpetual deadlines of the syndicated cartoonist. [SNIP] Hart was in his studio by choice, not servitude. The studio’s atrium—30 feet high, the walls richly paneled—is filled with incidental amusements, two pool...

Cartoonist Johnny Hart, who won awards and acclaim for creating the BC comic strip, has died at the age of 76. BC, which depicts a world populated by cavemen and dinosaurs, first appeared in 1958 and eventually reached more than 100 million people. Mr Hart also co-created The Wizard of Id, the story of a run-down kingdom ruled by a tyrannical monarch. Mr Hart's wife, Bobby, said he died of a stroke on Saturday while working at his New York home. "He died at his storyboard," she told the Associated Press. Richard Newcombe, the founder and president of Creators...

NEW YORK Did "B.C." cartoonist Johnny Hart take another swipe at Islam in his July 3 comic? Several blogs -- including ComicsReporter.com and DailyCartoonist -- are wondering. In the comic , Hart shows his turtle character asking: "What makes a bite that's shaped like a crescent moon?" The bird standing on the turtle's shell answers: "A lunatic." A star is drawn near the turtle's "finger" to illustrate the location of the bite. A star/crescent moon is a symbol of Islam. There's also the possibility that Hart was making a "luna tick" pun instead of, or in addition to, making a...

This Open Column is talking about the Johnny Hart B.C. comic strip from May 1st. Link to strip:http://www.christiancourier.com/images/BCCOMIC.gif This woman in the OC goes on a rampage that the Tribune should yank B.C. out of the paper. It seems like she is very much anti-Christian. Here is a reply that I made to the editor of the Tribune: Dear Miss Wade, I am utterly amazed that you wrote this letter. Your lack of knowledge concerning Johnny Hart shows. Johnny Hart has been in the Tribune comics for quite a while now. But you didn't realize that since this was the...

This is actually a running debate. first the strip that offended Ebert and others. http://poynter.org/forum/view_post.asp?id=9440 Title: "B.C." vs. "Doonesbury" Posted By: Jim Romenesko From ROGER EBERT: I am not suggesting that Johny Hart's "B.C." comic strip today should be censored in any way, but I will be fascinated to see if any editors do spike it, as they sometimes spike "Doonesbury," etc., for political reasons. 5/3/2005 11:48:52 AM http://poynter.org/forum/?id=letters From MATT MENDELSOHN: Thanks to Roger Ebert for the heads up on Johnny Hart's slam on Darwin and evolution. When I Googled "Hart" I expected to find one -- just...

Comic strip treads on religious rights Friday, April 08, 2005 I fervently protest The Dispatch’s policy of running the bigoted writings of Johnny Hart in his strip B.C., an egregious act made all the worse because this anti-American trash appears on the Comics pages, where it can be read by children. In regard to the March 21 strip, what is so hard to understand is that the separation of church and state is one of our country’s greatest strengths. The fact that our governments and courts do not put one religion above another is perhaps the finest thing about our...

Can somebody with computer savvy please post today's B.C. comic strip. It is an absolutely beautiful slam against John Kerry. In Hart's style, it is subtle and never mentions Kerry by name, but references to "having a plan" and a "flip-flop" strategy make the point as plan as day.

So there's this caveman, see, and he goes to his outhouse in the middle of the night, slams the door and, noticing the aroma therein, says: "Is it just me or does it stink in here?" Get it? Of course you get it. In America we call this bathroom humor. Little boys have been giggling about outhouses and their accompanying olfactory assaults since, well, caveman days. No doubt Johnny Hart's recent "B.C." comic strip depicting the same got lots of little-boy giggles from fans of his strip, which he began in 1958 when Americans still had a sense of humor....

An open-and-shut case of hypocrisyBy Mark Steyn(Filed: 25/11/2003) The other day, a producer called me up and asked if I wanted to take part in a discussion about an American cartoon strip - to whit, B.C. by Johnny Hart, which has been running in a gazillion newspapers around the world for as long as I can remember. I usually check in with it a couple of times a decade while waiting at the gate for a delayed flight, and am happy to find it refreshingly unchanged. It's set in a modified caveman era, which is to say that, like...

'B.C.' cartoon seen as slur of Islam Muslims allege veteran artist Hart made cryptic attack Posted: November 22, 20031:00 a.m. Eastern © 2003 WorldNetDaily.com The Council on American-Islamic Relations once again is demanding an apology for an alleged slur of Muslims, this time asserting a veteran cartoonist has cryptically defamed Islam. The Washington, D.C.-based group sent out a dispatch to its e-mail list after a "B.C." cartoon last week by Johnny Hart was publicly questioned on a Washington Post Web chat page. The cartoon shows a caveman entering an outhouse at night, and then saying, from inside, "Is it just me, or...

Did Johnny Hart -- the beloved creator of "B.C." and one of the most widely read cartoonists on Earth -- sneak a vulgar defamation of Islam into the comics pages last week? The question was raised yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington-based civil rights group, in an e-mail to its membership. Hart and his syndicate say no -- that a simple, straightforward joke is being misconstrued. That may well be true, but the 73-year-old cartoonist's history of evangelizing his Christian beliefs through his comic cavemen have left many people doubtful. The cartoon, which appeared Nov. 10...

On Easter of all days, Gary Trudeau uses his Doonesbury cartoon to insult Christians in general, and George Bush's faith in particular. How quick the liberals are to condemn someone else's faith and belief system, but just let a Christian say anything negative about another's belief system and how quick they are to invoke an injunction against "judgementalism."You can read the cartoon for yourself at the following link CLICK HERE for cartoon

Please excuse this vanity post. I did a search for "B.C", Johnny Hart, and nothing came up. Today's comic strip in the Sunday Santa Barbara News-Press is beautiful. I'm surprised it wasn't censored by this liberal rag. Johnny Hart is a great fan of our President.
